“Boris Johnson’s government has been accused of corruption, privatising the NHS by stealth, operating a “chumocracy” and mishandling the pandemic and climate crisis, by Sir David King, a former government chief scientist.

“I am extremely worried about the handling of the coronavirus pandemic, about the processes by which public money has been distributed to private sector companies without due process,” he told the Guardian in an interview. “It really smells of corruption.””

There's been a bit of confusion about this story. People are labelling it corrupt but no lawyer would pick this case up because it's technically not an issue.

Despite what it looks like, there isn't actually anything wrong with lobbying. Lobbying is a very corporate and social affair that does mean using networks. 

Lobbyists can theoretically be anyone, the only flat out no rule to it is if they are in between jobs or affiliations. 

I understand why it looks bad, but sadly it's business that most politicians regardless of what party will do, even if they know those in government well. 

On a side note: France, Germany and Canada employ some privatization. It doesn't mean we directly pay as consumers, it means doctors/GPs/labs are able to charge the government for services. It's very similar to NHS dentists.

The Government is corrupt. Billion away in dodgy contracts, a failed track and trace system. The tories have been slowly privatising the NHS for years. They voted again protecting the NHS in any future trade deal. So yeah.

To my knowledge, there isn't anything wrong with privatizing aspects of healthcare. It's a bit of false belief that's been misunderstood because we are proud of the NHS - as we should be. 

Privatization becomes a problem when healthcare access becomes restricted. I doubt any UK government would even consider removing universal access to healthcare - it was be instantly unpopular. Unfair comparisons with the US are made, but the vast majority of the world is more privatized than the UK system.

Canada and France have more privatized elements to their system than the UK and their performance is ranked consistently higher because resources can be allocated on high-priority services (e.g. cancer treatment). The UK does well in most factors other than survival and prognosis sadly because resources are stretched and adding more funds isn't a sustainable, long-term option.

I am all for universal, public healthcare and have relied on it in multiple countries. However, virtually all privatization attempts discussed in the UK are there to improve access to healthcare based on what's seen in similar universal healthcare systems.

This includes shorter wait times, access to new technologies and expert doctors (who might be incentivized to stay due to higher pay potential). However, unlike the extreme privatized US system, we would not pay the bill personally for these services. Instead, the government receives the bill and taxpayers collectively pay for it.
