187 countries vote to end Cuba's US embargo

This is geopolitically relevant in many ways starting from the fact that all US' allies, including all NATO members, voted against their main protector's interests. Such straighforward votes are exceptional and perhaps perplexing.

On the other hand, they also show that 2 countries are indebited to the US to the extend they are unable to say no even under such circumstances: those involved in wars for which the US sends aid, namely Israel and Ukraine.

A leftover from the Cold War when Cuba aligned itself with the USSR. 

After that the Cuban Missile Crisis happened when the US placed nukes in Italy and Turkey and the USSR in Cuba (but USSR sucked and really showed itself to be expansionist so there's that ).

In my opinion, these Cold War mentality sanctions against Cuba, Venezuela and other countries should be ended.

Republicans complain about mass migration, but the reality these sanctions and the poverty it creates contributes to this crisis forcing people to move somewhere else.

Cuba has been a political pawn by the US for far too long. There is no reason to have such embargo’s on it anymore than for brownie points in elections. Obama slightly opened things up, Trump reclosed things and Biden never made good on his promise to reverse Trumps policies.

It must not feel great for the whole planet to condemn your actions, so there is at least a symbolic aspect. But there are no other aspects beside the symbolic aspect.

Ideally I don't think any country should have veto rights privileges in the UN.

It's hypocritical and shows the world that the US won't play by the same rules it forces on others.  I work with Cubans on visas at my job and this embargo makes life hard on their families back home. It's sad.

Indeed, they are very rare. Usually, the vote is split along the lines of US-friends and US-foes and is typically a loyalty vote rather than a vote of rationality. Ukraine and Israel's existence depend so much on weapon deliveries, that they simply cannot afford to vote against US wishes, although Ukraine's abscence -and not direct no- is a little criticism towards the US. It is interesting that not even anglophone core countries - Canada & UK - voted for US control.

Cuba should not be anymore under an US embargo. They are and were no danger to the world. The only thing that this embargo achieved was more poverty in Cuba and that Cubans will dislike for at least a century the US.

Because Fidel Castro decided to ally with the USSR after the United States tried to murder him like 500 times for the crime of identifying as a socialist who cracked down on white colonial explotation of the native population. The embargo is an inhuman act of bullying and cruelty which is still in place even though Castro himself died in 2016.

The Americans who are most against lifting the embargo are cuban americans in Florida.  

I think it's a little bit more than just the cold war/cuban missle crisis.  The idea (I think) was to topple the regime which was a really corrupt and cruel form of Communism.  

I've been there, it's a beautiful country and really wonderful people and so much going for it.  I hope what ever is best for Cubans is what happens.

Ukraine abstained. It means neither for nor against. 

And it's probably a decision based on diplomatic reciprocity. Cuba abstained when U.N overwhelmingly voted in March 2022 to condemn Russia's invasion.
