Is Taylor only able to rerecord everything bc she wrote the songs/melodies? like.. could Kesha do Animal (Kesha's version)? for example

I think Kesha can, but nobody is gonna buy Animal (Keshas version)

JoJo did the same thing as Taylor Swift

I mean JoJo did it too a long time ago for her two albums and while it wasn’t commercially really anything it was just for peace of mind of her owning her stuff

Yes

What would make an artist unable to rerecord their music? like Britney Spears couldn't do Oops bc she didn't write it?

It depends on who owns publishing rights. Taylor owns the publishing rights to her old lyrics & melodies, whereas Shamrock own the recording rights for the og album masters. Shamrock can be sneaky and release recordings they have, while Taylor can approve or deny their use in media (i.e. film/TV). Taylor's able to exploit this by doing Taylor's Version and refusing any film/TV sync requests that involve the old versions.

Bonnie McKee is also doing a re-recordings project, but she has no rights to "American Girl", despite having written it, so there's nothing she can do there

Is she redoing her old music or songs she wrote for other people? I don’t know any of her music except American girl :franminervini:

I reckon the company that currently owns Taylor’s stolen masters will sue her over the re-recordings

But they only own the masters, right? The lyrics, composition and everything else is her property. On what grounds can they sue her?

Something something idk

I remember a clause saying she couldn’t release a re-recording for five years after the album came out, which caused problems with some live performances and why Reputation (TV) is one of the last.

I’m so excited for Speak Now. It’s one of my favorite Taylor records and I don’t revisit it because I don’t really enjoy her younger vocals now.
