"The federal government is asking gay and bisexual men to reduce their number of sexual partners to curb the spread of monkeypox. But community health workers and advocates say that spread is being fuelled by the lack of government support, financial and otherwise, for those who are at risk."

“The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends practising safer sex (and) having fewer sexual partners, particularly anonymous partners, even when they don’t have symptoms, can also reduce your risk of getting infected,” said Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, at a news conference Wednesday. Tam also stressed the value of vaccination in thwarting the disease.

I mean, it'd be OK if they asked people to be more "selective", why gay and bisexual men? Not every gay or bisexual man is promiscuous, and if we're like that, what would be the problem? Is monkeypox only dangerous to gay and bisexual men? So ridiculous turning this into a gay/bisexual men thing. Also it is not only transmitted sexually, which makes this even worse. I'm so tired of things like this.

It is very, very predominantly affecting LGBT tho and men do have a tendency to be much bigger risk takers. And while it's not the only way to get it, sexual encounters so far seems like the easiest way?

 

Anyway ur right u could just say be more selective in general cuz then that applies to heterosexuals who may be premiscuous also.

I do agree with what you are saying, though. I get where this is coming from, but I think it should have have said in a different way so it doesn't end up being used by certain people to target gay and bisexual men.

Yeah. I'd have said it differently too

 

But ultimately I don't think their intent was to shame LGBT. They are just merely from a medical perspective seeing that at least for now gay and bisexual men are a community that are extremely disproportionately being affected so I don't think they are wrong for saying this

 

But again, I agree the wording should have been a little more sensitive to not sound too Simmilar to the 1970s/1980s aids shaming on LGBT kinda thing

I don't think hetero men get the opportunity to get as many partners even if they want to that's the difference

 

A gay man, if he chooses to be premiscuous and he is at least decent looking just on Grindr alone he can get lots of action with a stranger he never met. Not as easy to do with women

 

As a bi guy who has had Grindr and has also tried hooking up with women as well online as well and at bars etc... I can't tell u it's not even remotely the same game at all. It's WAY more difficult to have a lot of female partners and more effort too

 

Women seem to have more social inhibitions when it comes to sex. I suppose fear of things like abuse and rape also make them less comfortable to open up so quickly and easily which is understandable

I think she grew up in a culture where u can be way more blunt and not thinking about how ur words might come across to others

Your threads are often well put together, very informative but your defense of this homophobic rhetoric is completely unnecessary. The cultural relativism that this stigma has in the context of LGBT people & how we are viewed in the Western world has absolutely everything to do with why using this language is not just irresponsible. The language & terminology is dangerous & hateful.

This is very “All Lives Matter” energy.

One specific demographic is making up around 98% of cases. That’s why the effort is being focused there first.

I think that's using the term way too loosely tbh 

 

It's a medical fact at this time that between 95% to 97% of cases so far are concentrated in non-heterosexual males

 

Her wording may not have been very sensitive and I myself wouldn't have said it like that... But to say focusing on a group of ppl when the date is irrefutable is homophobic I think is an overstatement
