And funny how you only respond to that part but completely ignore the other points I was making and the fact Spanish itself is a colonizer tool and language, so making it more gender neutral is not colonizing it Also, I'm not implying all Spanish speakers need to subscribe to or use the term. But there's no reason for undermining it or being prejudiced against it when people are simply trying to make a colonizer language and patriarchy system more inclusive and sensitive to the times that we are in. Double colonizing is better, I guess? Instead of the old established Spanish we’re gonna let white Americans change how we speak then? Latino includes everyone and that is a fact. I won’t subscribe to Latinx anytime soon but people can call themselves whatever they want but don’t make us the villains for not going along with it. Biden can barely finish his sentences, he sounds like he’s sleep-talking half sentences during his press conferences.. and let’s not kid ourselves and act like his administration is worlds different from Trumps. Half of his policies read as republican. Just because he’s “the better of two evils” doesn’t mean we can’t be critical of him

Many languages are gendered. But in Spanish “Latino” means everyone. But the issue is that it’s using the masculine ending which can make trans-identifying hispanics uncomfortable. I see Latinx used by plenty of Indigenous hispanics. It’s literally the exact same change as adding in they/them to your vocabulary. It’s not that big of a change. It’s just a gender neutral term lol

This is not something white Americans have come up with. I’m like 90% sure it comes from this given the usage “x” https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20181125-the-third-gender-of-southern-mexico Spanish itself is already a white/colonized language, so you don’t have to worry about “double” colonization

I won’t subscribe to Latinx anytime soon but people can call themselves whatever they want but don’t make us the villains for not going along with it. First of all, if you actually did any research on the topic, it's not white people who decided to do it. Spanish-speaking people got tired of how gendered their language is and wanted to make the language more gender neutral, so Latinx got introduced for that reason. But other terms such as Latin@s or using the neutral e also are used to indicate the same thing since the x doesn't make a lot of sense or in use much in Spanish. Secondly, regardless of what your opinion is, "Latinos" defaults to the masculine, just as if it were a group of all women it would be "Latinas". Bottom line is defaulting to the masculine is tantamount to patriarchy or white supremacy given the default and assumption in US society, and historically Spanish society too where Spanish originated, is always male and white. Spanish originated from a white, male society that was misogynist and racist, and yet here you are defending that history apparently because that's just the way it is, when this is seeking to address that history and make it more inclusive and open to all human beings rather than Spanish society at that time. Addressing and acknowledging a culture's and language's history is not "anglicizing" it, especially when it's speakers of the language itself seeking to address their language's sexist, patriarchal history. You'd think someone such as yourself would be aware of these issues and not so ignorant about this usage and the reasoning behind it, so color me surprised. I repeat: I understand the need of gender neutral terms, but I just think it’s not necessary in this case. They/them etc. I’m all for and whatnot. And I don’t disagree, but from my experience most Latinos don’t use and don’t want to use this term. I feel comfortable using Latinos and don’t want to be referred to as something else. You cannot honestly tell me as a Spanish speaker that X at the end of Latin makes any sense.

You should really do some soul-searching and research on this, because in my experience it's most often indigenous people who had their culture and language stripped of them by Spanish colonizers and the Spanish language, and seek to address that in part by using such terms. And inclusive, open-minded white people who wish to be sensitive to this topic have chosen to use it likewise, given how many indigenous people there are who don't believe the term "Latinos" is actually inclusive of everyone at all considering it defaults to the masculine which inherently is not inclusive. lifeasgeorge 9,427
I don't see an issue with him using that term. The term 'latinx' is commonly used in ethnics studies and chicano courses/research at universities; it's more inclusive than Latino/Latina for nonbinary or trans peoples (or people who aren't comfortable disclosing their gender). The real issue to me here is him using the term 'latinx' as if him and his administration are allies to the latin community when Kamala was just telling immigrants to not come and we still have kids in cages. At the end of the day I don't care what verbiage you are using but what actions and policies are you actively putting into place to aid this community. Anyways, thank you very much for the info, I understand now! Latin does not equal Latino. Some wanted to say that Latino was the male version since the term Latina exists for female. But i think like the word Mankind is gender neutral. But since the people who are from this community don't seem to want Latinx, I say.... Latino??...Latinx? PartySick 173,002
The word annoys me phonetically more than anything tbh. I just use latino because that's basically used as "they". All latin languages default to the masculine words afaik (like in English we refer to groups of people as "guys", it's the same thing and it doesn't mean you're referring to everyone in that group as literal men). The word "latine" exists as well. Whimsical bitch
