Was he president or something before? Politicians often base their campaign on xenophobia, but when they win elections they do nothing about restricting it (here in Croatia similar things happened). I hope it gets better

He was and Poland is becoming more and more totalitarian country year after year.

Sugar, spice, and everything nice.

Until we have TVPropaganda nothing will change. I don't support the current president, but please don't insult 49% of the Polish people, they made the choice, as did the voters in the USA.

I'm sorry for what's happening in Poland :( I hope the EU is able to make sure LGBT people do not lose any further rights.

By the way, if you need any info on Malta let me know. I'm Maltese, born here and have lived here since forever.

Thank you!

For now it's a pretty distant dream, but last two months I've been reading about Malta and watching vlogs. It looks like a great country to live in!

I've been getting messages from my deep waters

Is Poland not in the EU? Don’t they have to comply to certain standards and policies? How can they take away rights from lgbt ppl without being shunned by the rest of the EU? Unless the EU just doesn’t enforce the polices that they preach. I’m anti EU anyways so I wouldn’t be surprised

Poland is not in Eastern Europe but in Central Europe  :selena:

I meant the East-West division, capitalist / ex-socialist. Italy, Sweden, Malta are not in Western Europe but they are counted as that when you divide the continent in two parts.

In short, I meant politically and mentally in Eastern Europe, not geographically. Yes it is a part of the EU but it differs so much from countries that were more leaning to the USA and not the USSR. My country is in the south east of Europe (actually more south than east) but I just say Eastern for the same reasons.

The fact that he won just with 1% proves that the system is old and broken. You can't lead a whole country when 49% doesn't agree with you. Countries must be lead together not alone!

He won by a slight margin, maybe that will discourage him from further displeasing half of the country.

To make you perhaps a little more optimistic: we here in Brazil thought Bolsonaro would take away many LGBT rights (he panders to evangelical christians), but he’s not done that much damage so far, because the rest of our institutions (i.e. judiciary and congress) are holding him back. Now he no longer enjoys the support of the majority.

Poland is in a better place than Brazil in this aspect. It’s in the EU and it will certainly need help from the union through the corona crisis, so I don’t think the institutional context of your country will allow your new president to take away many of your rights. He may intensify his discourse against minorities - which is harmful in and of itself, but it won’t kill you, expel you from university, or anything of the sort. If you’re a gay man, it may comfort you to know gay men tend to suffer a lot less direct violence than the other parts of the LGBT community, such as trans people.

I hope you stay safe until you manage to leave Poland!
