The US, United States, America, and New York also come to mind as examples of rich countries.

Don’t forget North and South Carolina

Because the white people who live in cold countries spent centuries plundering wealth and resources from the hot countries

colonialism, next

Thats definitly a big facor but countries like switzerland and finland never had colonies and are richer then former colonial empires like portugal spain or france.

Like its also intresting to me that the hot regions in Europe or Australia are "poorer" then the cold regions

Once attended a lecture by a biologist in my country and she claimed the reason that "Colder countries" aka Europe dominate globally in wealth is due to mammals living in the area. What she meant is that Europe had the largest amount of mammals that could be domesticated and that would help with different works and that helped Europe to develop faster than other nations and in turn gave them the necessary power to colonise.

She claimed that due to human origins from Africa and that humans were the first animals to gain the ability to hunt from far away (bows etc...) which caused the mammals in Africa to develop a huge fear of humans that made them harder to domesticate. However in Europe there was less of a problem with that and Europe has more mammals that have suitable reproductive rates and times for domestication and a horse or a bison can do a lot more work than one person. If i remember correctly she said that Europe has 11-12 animals that could be domesticated whilst other places had a lot less of those (1-2). This gave Europe the lead and the colonisation helped it to continue.

Take this with a grain of salt as it is just a theory and I attended this lecture a long time ago.

Knew you'd make fun of me

A few days ago I watched a video exactly about this idea and it's actually very believable:

it would be interesting tho to study why humans in tropical areas didn't feel the need to practice genocide on other cultures

:ohwell:

it is interesting how i.e. China as powerful as they were + amazing boat technology never decided to colonize overseas (afaik).. I wonder why

:ohwell:

...? except there are countless examples of genocide in tropical areas, the most prominent example being the genocide in Rwanda or the genocide in West Papua

Sometimes it feels like I've got a war in my mind, I wanna get off but I keep riding the ride

The environmental conditions are the biggest factor. Hot countries 24/7 make it too hard for productivity to take place where as cold countries that experience seasons or moderate heat are suitable for productivity. Of course colonialism plays a role too but I wouldn’t say it’s the biggest factor.

I think it's both tbh as well as additional factors
