According to this map, the ''cold'' countries have greater agricultural resources that might've given them a head start back when agricultural output made up most of the country's wealth. That is, cold countries have only been rich for 10% of recorded history. To answer the question of WHY the situation reversed, one word is sufficient: slavery. Hot countries 24/7 make it too hard for productivity to take place where as cold countries that experience seasons or moderate heat are suitable for productivity.
