A shame. But I understand how it can be a complicated topic to address as it brings up ambiguous ethics and requires us to question behaviours that are engrained in our brains. However I do think that it is still important to talk about as its a topic that affects us all.

But I totally understand if you don't want to engage in this topic on a lady gaga forum hahaha.

I understand that you dont come here for debates of vegetarianism and I'm sorry if you feel like I am soapboxing a bit.

I am just really passionate about the topic and since its related to the topic of the thread I thought about bringing it up.

I'm sorry if I upset you.

Take care out there :sara:

Oh, no you’re good. There’re just other future alternatives to ’’grow’’ meat through stem cells from animals and to extract the cells doesnt hurt the animals either.

It just means another animal will be killed in greater quantities. It doesn't really help anything :emma:

Either ban them all or none.

I don't get Western societies putting pet animals above others but they do and maybe why so many in this thread are praising this

If at least there was some higherarchy based on intelligence it make make sense to elevate some animals over others but that's clearly not the case cause pigs for example have been shown to be one of the most intelligent animals out there and they are among the most eaten in Western World :emma:

I do get your point, its definetely a complicated issue....

As for pigs. They are kept inside for all their lives, again, for their own wellbeing. They don't do well outside. Their metabolic system is not well developed. Their pulmonary systems shut off when kept outside. They suffer from very bad sunburns as well.

The reason why pigs have these issues is because they have been bred for consumption. We have modified the genetic code of wild animals for the purpose of consumption so much that they can barely survive in the wild anymore! Doesn't that also make you realize how fucked up this is? However I have hope as if we are able to change their genetic code in one direction hopefully we can change it in the other to make them able to live in the wild again.

Chicken: there are different farms with different systems. Many farms are cage free and even outdoors. Yes, you might think that there are loads of animals in a small space but chicken tend to gather up in groups very close to each other for the sake of lower maintenance costs. Basically, they warm each other up instead of using a lot of their own energy to warm up. They choose to be packed(im not talking about cages). Battery cages are banned throughout EU. Yes, enriched cage systems are still allowed. But animals have to have enough space for exercise, claw-shortening device. Health problems? As outdoor chicken are more likely to catch viral diseases so it's a 50/50 situation. While keeping outdoor does prevent from arthritis in a way, it doesnt prevent viral diseases.

Ok I'm sorry, but first of all a lot of what you say is just not true. A great majority, over 90% of all chicken eaten in the UK comes from factory farms in which each chicken has an amount of space equivalent to an a4 paper. It is not the norm for farms to be outdoors. THIS is the norm.

596e18d1e3bcd307bf020f9f_chickens_vegan_

Sure they are cage free but the chickens are squeezed together in suboptimal conditions. While chickens tend to be more social animals you're not going to tell me that chickens are used to be squeezed together like this in the wild:

Also, their lifespan of a few years is reduced to an average of 42 days in these farms.

Does it look like they have enough space to exercise? no. And this is the situation for over 90% of the chicken eaten in the UK.

I'm sorry but from everything I see these chickens do not live happy lives.

Cows: again, not true. There is a law for fiber to be included in the diet. No farm is completely based on cereal. As for grazing outside, do you think that cows are supposed to stay outside during winter? What are they gonna graze on? Of course they will be housed inside for some period of time. Respiratory problems in the sheds. There are restrictions on chemicals(so2, nh4, co2) levels in the barns. No farmer wants to risk that, therefore, good ventilation systems are installed way before any animals are brought in.

Of course their diet isn't 100% based on cereal but it is mostly based on cereal as this is the cheapest. Can you honestly tell me that all of these cows have a healthy diet? The fact that they grow so large so fast compared to their growth in the wild is proof that their diet isn't healthy for them.

Tail biting, ear picking and feather picking does not only occur due to boredom and lack of space. There are hierarchies and dominant behaviours in animals not only kept in indoors but also in the wild. All the procedures are for the wellbeing of the animal in the long term.

Of course that these behaviours are natural but due to the fact that so many animals are kept in such close proximity these trends are exacerbated and the procedure taked against it like tail clipping in pigs are only necessary because they are kept in such stressful conditions.

Sentience topic.

Ok, regarding this topic every animal is different, and what you say doesn't address the fact that these animals can feel pain, stress and other negative emotions in similar ways as we do.

I do believe that a lot of animals like you say live in the present moment. This doesn't change the fact that in every moment of their lives these animals are suffering.

You talking about massive factory farms could be a topic to cover when improving the standards. Why not limiting the number of animals kept in a farm rather than banning meat?

The thing is that almost all the meat that people consume come from these factory farms.

I agree that these farms should be regulated and that the lives of these animals should be improved. I hope that you can agree with me that the current status quo is that animals that live in factory farms do not live happy lives.

I don't think we should just ban meat, I just hope that we can reach a point where enough people are vegetarian that banning it will only be a formality.

And animals going extinct is just not a topic we should even take into consideration. It would take thousands of years for them to either adapt or go extinct and so many animals would suffer in the wild in much worse ways than being killed in an abattoir.

I don't know the facts but I agree that these animals could maybe suffer in the wild aswell. I don't personally believe they would suffer as much as in captivity but even if they did I still think it would be better for them to not even be born rather than live a life of suffering thus I think that extinction is better than constant suffering. Of course life is made of subtleties and in the end no matter what even if meat consuption ends from one day to another I still think that we would stop these species from going totally extinct and we would protect them in sanctuaries or zoo's.

I think I've been overly intense in this response lol. I'm drunk.

Sorry if I seem aggressive not my intention. I'm just drunk and too lazy to re read my message to see if its too much ahhaha.

Don't hate me :kara:

No offense to anyone but how can someone be fine with eating meat knowing that an innocent living being was tortured, abused and murdered? My family and I have never eaten meat so I’m really curious. :oprah:

Its complicated. Its easier for you to talk since you have never eaten meat so it just makes sense for you not too.

But for most people eating meat is just part of culture and the denial or ignoring of animal suffering is also part of the cultural zeitgeist.

Thus it can be very hard for people to step out of that since meat is attached to a lot of cultural institutions and ways of living and stuff.

I get your intentions but I don't think its right to judge anyone for their way of life, we are all different and on our own journeys impacted by the way we were brought up and the experiences we lived. Each one of these experiences is valid and the best we can do is to try and show facts to people and hope that they change their lifestyle at some point too. But if they don't thats ok too.

About god damn ****ing time.

I hope that soon, we will ban all meat for "the progress of human civilization" as the chinese put it.

I know this is gonna be controversial but I am ready to have a constructive debate with any meat eater that disagrees with me.

Yay! Constructive non aggressive debate without it having to be mean

:yay:

Agreed sis! No one needs to eat meat in the 21st century, it is no longer a necessity. Veganism can be "extreme" to some (I say this as a vegan, so any fellow vegans, plz dont be mad:ohno:) but I definitely think one day the entire planet could at least abandon eating meat and keeping animals captive for the purpose of slaughtering them for their meat.

Not only can we find the essential nutrition from meat in plants or other foods, but the reason why some viruses happen is because of contact with animals and humans (that's how COVID-19 started) and when we eat animals, and keep them in close quarters such as wet markets or food markets in general, or slaughterhouses, or farms, the chance of spread is increased so much more.:ohno:

The meat industry also contributes to a huge amount of greenhouse emissions, deforestation, and is a huge cause of ocean dead zones and extinctions of certain species. We could do so much better as a world family to coexist with our non-human cousins :hug:

That's good, but what's the point? Covid-19 came from pangolin meat in wet markets, and they still sell it lol (I'm not saying that stopping to kill innocent dogs is useless, but it's not even the animal that brought the Covid-19 to humans)

I just discovered pangolins and they are actually adorable. They look like Pokemon.

Now stop wet markets, make it illegal to be unhygienic in markets, have people check on a daily basis what's going on there

Okay well are they gonna stop the Open Air markets

and stop arresting their citizens for speaking up about issues

and stop trying to destroy their involvement with the Coronavirus Pandemic

and give their citizens free speech

They should close wet markets for starters. No wonder the virus originated from there.

I watched the video about wet markets and I can not eat anything.

I guess what y'all are trying to say instead is that they should ban the trade of live animals and tighten hygiene regulations at wet markets?

You do know that wet markets there are the equivalent of farmer's markets or market halls all across the world right? You can't just close them...citizens depend on them for buying their food supplies.

Just because we're so used to mass corporations selling us packaged food in shiny supermarkets doesn't mean that we should look down on the poor farmers and vendors trying to make a living. What they need however are regulations to prevent the spread of such viruses.

This is good but dogs are not the problem. None of the animals were the problem. The problem is how alive and dead animals are put in cages togather in bad condition. Getting foreign animals mixed with local animals is another problem. This video explains everything:

THANK YOU

It's the deplorable animal cruelty to all types of animals that is the problem

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

I dont think it's a question of if they will figure out a way to close them without hurting the people who need them, but when. And that's what needs to happen.

Sis. They have markets like this everywhere. Of course not just chinese ones. In the end, when all is said and done, I think once the world sees the economic damage this does, they'll do what it take to ensure they get shut down.
