The Chinese government has signalled an end to the human consumption of dogs, with the agriculture ministry today releasing a draft policy that would forbid canine meat.

Citing the “progress of human civilisation” as well as growing public concern over animal welfare and prevention of disease transmission from animals to humans, China’s Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Affairs singled out canines as forbidden in a draft “white list” of animals allowed to be raised for meat.

The ministry called dogs a “special companion animal” and one not internationally recognised as livestock.

The city of Shenzhen recently approved the first ever mainland China ban on consumption of dog and cat meat, a move that has given hope to animal welfare groups worldwide that other parts of the country could soon follow suit. The new draft policy has provided even more.

“The signal is the first ever from a ministry that dogs are not food animals,” Paul Littlefair, international head of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals told the Guardian.

About god damn fucking time.

I hope that soon, we will ban all meat for "the progress of human civilization" as the chinese put it.

I know this is gonna be controversial but I am ready to have a constructive debate with any meat eater that disagrees with me.

Yay! Constructive non aggressive debate without it having to be mean

i mean, i get why they've done it but they shouldn't bow to western sentimental pressure

yes, the way they kill and eat dogs is cruel and disgusting and should absolutely be banned, but if they're raised and killed humanely it should be legal. it should be restrictions and hygiene standards, not out right banning

Is there any way to "Humanely" raise something for its purpose in life to be death?

I'm genuinely asking, I just believe that it is inherently INhuman to raise any living creature for its only purpose to be death and consumption.

"While not officially a ban on the consumption of dog meat, the draft policy from the agriculture ministry could be a “game changer moment for animal welfare in China”, Wendy Higgins of Humane Society International (HSI) told the Guardian."

So... What did they accomplish?

no there isn't a way, and i'm a meat eater who's aspiring to convert to veganism, but my point is that they should hold dogs to the same standard as cows, pigs and other livestock. holding dogs in this supreme superior position when in fact they're no different to the other animals we eat is a very dangerous mentality. i'm simply saying that if they're gonna allow ANY meat consumption to continue, they should allow dog meat too instead of being picky and choosy about what they're sentimentally attached to. it's hypocrisy

This is great, but what I am really hoping to hear about are severe restrictions on the wildlife trade.
Judging by the way they are doing it (limited white list, instead of needing to make an infinitely long black list that could be missing species) I think there is a good chance that this will broadly target the wildlife trade and open air meat markets. I hope fishes and marine life aren't left out

My old cat is a tough man, but i cant deny the way he bites my hand and he stabs me, he grabs me by my heart <3

Bless your soul for aspiring to veganism of vegetarianism. That is so fucking brave and its the hardest yet most important step to actually doing it. You can be proud.

Whilst I agree that dogs shouldn't be held in any special standard i honestly see no downsides to banning their consumption. That makes at least one animal species that doesn't have to suffer anymore.

Of course its hypocrisy but we have to accept that humanity is inherently hypocritical, doesn't mean we should stop trying to improve ourselves.

Any kind of step towards ending the suffering of other animals is a step that should commended not discouraged in my opinion.

But I understand if you still disagree, its a very sticky topic.

That's good, but what's the point? Covid-19 came from pangolin meat in wet markets, and they still sell it lol (I'm not saying that stopping to kill innocent dogs is useless, but it's not even the animal that brought the Covid-19 to humans)

thank you! i'm slowly reducing my consumption and i'm making the leap :)

obviously i don't want dogs to suffer and in the short term it's a great idea, i'm just concerned about the moral implications. if we hold dogs to a higher standard it immediately objectifies other animals and makes cows, pigs etc. feel less important or like a different level to dogs, which is in my opinion harmful

Okay well are they gonna stop the Open Air markets

and stop arresting their citizens for speaking up about issues

and stop trying to destroy their involvement with the Coronavirus Pandemic

and give their citizens free speech

This is good but dogs are not the problem. None of the animals were the problem. The problem is how alive and dead animals are put in cages togather in bad condition. Getting foreign animals mixed with local animals is another problem. This video explains everything:
