StrawberryBlond 14,298
Can someone pls confirm this, is Rihanna bigger than Gaga in UK? What I only know is that they're both huge there. At the moment, Rihanna. She became really popular in the UK from GGGB and onwards, but it was when she released Loud that she became a real force on the charts. Loud is her most successful album here, selling over 1.8 million and she did a ton of arena dates in the UK with the Loud tour, almost all of them sold out and she's doing three stadium shows here with her new tour, with the possibility of more. Her singles after WFL pretty much flopped, though and while Diamonds went to #1, it only got one week at the top, which is pretty rare for a Rihanna single these days and what with all the new releases this week and the fact that she didn't have her usual X Factor promotion yestarday, this might be her first album since Rated R not to go to #1. As long as she releases dancey tunes, the UK will have her back, but if she gets too "weird" (Rated R), too sedate (almost all her ballads) or too urban (the later singles from TTT), she flops. Basically, if it's a tune you can dance too, Rihanna's pretty much got a UK #1 in the bag. But outwith that, she struggles immensly. I was rather concerned when she further diminished Gaga's acheivements last year with the release of TTT and I'm glad Gaga didn't have to compete with her this year. TTT, despite being released later, has almost sold as many copies as BTW, which is really annoying. Rihanna's releases always instil real fear into any other artist here, and that's why I'm glad that Gaga lays off the November releases to avoid direct competition. With every album, I keep hoping that this is the time when the public finally get bored of Rihanna, but unless she takes two years or more to release her next one, I don't see interest in her dying down anytime soon. Ozzy8923 9
WOW. Lotus debuts at #28?! That's dreadful. Mind my asking, how strong of a force was X-Tina in the UK?
StrawberryBlond 14,298
WOW. Lotus debuts at #28?! That's dreadful. Mind my asking, how strong of a force was X-Tina in the UK? She never reached the level of Rihanna and Gaga, but she was very successful during her Stripped era. She was THE biggest popstar in the UK at that time. It's probably why she filmed her tour DVD here. Lady Marmaade went to #1 and it kicked off the UK's obsession with her and it led to Dirrty and Beautiful going to #1 and Fighter at #3. Can't Hold Us Down went to #6 and The Voice Within at #9. Her Stripped album went to #2, went 5x platinum and has sold 1.8 million to date (which just so happens to be the same amount that Rihanna's most successful album sold in the UK) and remains her most successful UK album. Her success continued when she released a cover of Car Wash, which went to #2. She released Back To Basics, which went to #1, though it's sold considerably less copies to date (522,000+) and the lead single, Ain't No Other Man went to #2. But then she released Hurt as the second single and that's when it all fell apart. It was her first single not to go top ten since the year 2000 and it was all downhill from there. The radio never played her songs, the public stopped talking about her and she's been flopping like hell ever since. I assume the big wait between albums is the main cause of it. If you want UK success, your albums have to be frequent. She barely did promotion here either, which is also a key factor to UK success. Her last #1 was Beautiful in 2002 and her last top ten was Ain't No Other Man in 2006. Even Madonna has had UK #1's later than that and she's 54. She rarely promotes now and assumes her name alone will bring in all the money and sales and that simply is not the case. Even the biggest of stars need promotion to score their sales. Oh... thanks for the response. I thought gagz is more superior than riri in UK. "A little less conversation and a little more touch my body." Dangerous Man 9,245
They both go up and down in popularity. Talk That Talk's era was about the same as Born This Way's. massive first hit, #1 album and then singles dwindled away with the exception of TEOG & WHYB hmmm..thanks. but...how about the number of records(songs+album copies) both artists sold? Who's more superior? "A little less conversation and a little more touch my body."

StrawberryBlond 14,298
Jeez-o, Something New down to #4 just three days after release? The way it was going, it definitely had a chance at #1. This will probably mean that their second single won't fair much better, especially as all their biggest fans will already have it on the album. It's a crap song anyway, so I'm rather glad. Just a shame that their last #1 had to be the over-rated The Promise, which is by far one of their worst singles. Should've been Untouchable. And looks like I was wrong about Rihanna missing out on a #1 album. It must be going to #1 because the majority haven't listened to it online before buying it. The fans who love her dance pop songs are going to be pissed when they realise that there's only one song on the entire album that you can actually dance to.
