LeoFameMonster 1,592
what u said is true but ur failing to take into account 2 things #1 the Liberals in the late 90s were faced with a critical financial situation. The debt to GDP of 70% in those days was very high because interest rates used to be a lot higher. They were FORCED to make tough decisions to cut spending and even raise some taxes The Liberals back then eventually made changes to reduce Government. But thats not what they are advocating for right now, in fact they are endorsing deficits so the past has no application to their current ideals they are endorsing now #2 come on are you serious? 2008 saw the biggest crash since the great depression. ANY Government would have ran large deficits during that time as Corporate and personal income taxes dropped, EI claims rose, and demand for stimulus spending was in place. Virtually every Countries deficits swelled those first years of the crisis. Still our deficits were some 4% of GDP at ots worst year vs 9% to 10% in Japan, USA and much of Europe. And the deficits fell every year after what ur saying about the conservatives and finances isnt fair. These were unique circumstances. But they strongly advocate the ideal of balanced budgets exept for emergencies In 1997 they only woke up when they got desperate, just how Ontarios Liberals are only gettig tough on finances now that were finally getting desperate. and now that Canadas finances are good with a debt to GDP of 31% the liberals wanna overspend again. It's not overspending, its creating jobs and boosting our economy. I just wanted everyone to have the correct information not just one sided which is why I posted. Btw look up the length of liberals have been in power vs the length conservatives have been in power and see how much hundreds of billions more conversations have spent and how much liberals have spent. Liberals have been in power for WAYYYY longer yet managed to have lower debt. How is that? since you want to talk about over spending. Ok so people who don't have jobs and the thousands going on EI from just target should just go on EI?? or look for jobs that aren't there? or what do you propose? Liberals will make jobs. Harper Spends 54 million on a campaign like that isn't obnoxious enough. Save the surplus to bribe more people? You conservatives have the mentality now known as the rob ford mentality to cut cut cut take take take and it doesn't matter what or from where your cutting it from as long as you can say "you saved money" haha you saved money but when I go to the hospital there is 1 doctor or when I drop my kid to school they have 3 teachers for the entire school. lol its just mind blowing to see anyone young get fooled into a 54 million dollar scam, but that's amusing your young and not living in hickville ( you know what provinces I am talking about ;) And calling it over spending, implies that harper spent anything. Running a country is like a business if you only repair something at the bare minimum or not at all eventually it will break and fall apart. Hence the recession we are in. Harper only wants tax cuts for families with kids which neglects the majority of Canada. I'm sorry the last time I checked I have 1 income not 2. But on election day I get the honor of counting the the votes, when I get to ring in and say Liberals win the riding and then watch the news and see that Liberals won the election ill be siting pretty. Economy 52,845
Well I don't know exactly all the details with the current government but what I can see is the cuts done at my university and as a results the way the teaching is done. Less money less teachers hired or on a part time basis. Some with more workload while they do research. They raises the fees that may be low considering what people in the US but I think education is the one thing that should be free because you get a competent and skilled workforce. One thing that really impacted me directly but I think that this was done by Québec only is raising the fees for French students. We still get a good deal compared to other international student, we pay the same fees as Canadians but actually some Quebecers friends argued that it's unfair that Canadian out of province pay more and they should lower their fees and keep the fees for French students down because they bring a lot to the economy ( we can't work that much anyway, it's not like we as student are taking much jobs but we are spending a lot) plus once we graduate we can stay and we already speak French so positive for Québec if they don't want their province to have a big increase in English speaking population (something that is arguable btw)... I don't know enough about Canadian politics though, in one way I don't like too much control of the state but I don't like economy running every decision especially when it concerns education and such because it's creating more gap already existing. It' s a tough compromise to reach, few taxes and good welfare, I guess almost impossible in our current system i agree with you. Free market is good but theres specific things that are better government run such as infrastructure, education and healthcare i dont think University should be totally free tho. These courses are expensive to run and making them free could cause students to take it more for granted and #1 potentially not work as hard... and #2 not make definite decisions as quickly. U might try courses and see how it goes and if you dont like it try something else. In the mean time your wasting years of productivity and costing government money i do agree tuition is too high. It shoukd be lower to encourage education... But i dont think it should be TOTALY free for the reasons i mentioned. A course costing $3000 instead of $6000 though id totally support. Thats smart use of taxpayer money

Knowing democracy, Canadians, the people have spoken and they want change NOW. ok but i need to make a few points. For 1 were not in a true recession. The drop in oil prices caused a contraction in GDP but on a net basis were still creating jobs, real-estate and loan growth is still rising and consumer spending rising. Thats why economists call this a "technical recession". Its not a true recession. Just to make that clear also i do agree with some of your views... Like infrastructure is important. In that respect the liberals are better than conservatives (in case u didnt know, i never i said i prefer conservatives on everything). But theres no need to overspent now because the economy is not in an emergency now... Like this might be shruged off by many people but Canada has one of the richest middle classes in Canada. People dont realize how much higher our typical middle class incomes are or our net worths especially in relation to other developed nations. Were not doig as badly as oppostion proposes Lastly this is VERY IMPORTANT!!! The Liberals talk of middle tax cuts are propaganda they have no real impact for most people... Do you know how little impact lowering the income tax bracket of $45,000 to $90,000 tax by 1.5% will do??? First of all many peoplewont even make it into those brackets... And even an average household that makes $66,000 a year will only enter that bracket by $21,000. That means they will ONLY SAVE $315 a year more or less. Less than $30 a month. Thats Trudeaus brilliant tax cut for middle class. Real change eh??? However i give him credit for emphasis on infrastructure. If ur gonna overspent it might as well be on an investment. Also his plans for a slightly higher child benefit than Harpers $160/month deserves merit also his middle class tax cut he talks about tho will be meaningless to most people tho
TiphEret 1,320
i agree with you. Thats smart use of taxpayer money Yes but even if for many people 3000$ is manageable for example, it's still a lot for some who have nothing. I agree with you that when we don't pay we don't realise the costs of our education and that's true , I see it France and I have seen it in Denmark. I don't think it's a bad thing to change your study direction if you didn't know what the program would be unless you try it there is nothing wrong with that, of course to some extent. What could be done to keep it free would be to first inform students on the real costs of education, advise them well before they take a program, encourage gap year before uni that helps people to experience real life through work and mature. I heard but I am not sure because it was word of mouth that in Netherlands if you fail your exams you have to pay back what the government paid for you, that's a good way to push people to work actually! You can also limits the free studies to one free bachelor, one free master, one free phd per students and if they want extra unless it's sponsored by a company or they have a really good reason to do so then they should pay. I agree with what you say but I have also seen in France where education isn't free people who have no access to it because you also have to support yourself, it's not an easy access for everyone and that should be the most important. In Denmark I have also seen students that IMO didn't deserve the stipendium (monthly allowance the gov. gives to everyone) because clearly they weren't doing anything... But at the same time I was glad it allowed others to study seriously. It's like we have to compare how many it will benefit even if some may take advantage you know?
