HOW IS SHADOW OF A MAN BETTER THAN ENIGMA Production is better, vocals are better, melody is better. So I guess in every conceivable way? MACATL 1,875
I LOOOOOOVE Enigma. It one of Gaga‘s best IMO. That said, my vote is for SOAM. It’s just a stellar song on a stellar album. Edited 17 hours ago by MACATL
bim 764
Enigma is a damn good song. Vocals are so powerful. That growly ‘tonight’ towards the end, oof. It was possibly my favorite moment at the Chromatica Ball too. Shadow of a Man still takes the cake for me. I have a spiritual connection to it. Gaga’s music tends to be bizarrely resonant with me and this is a great example. In the summer of 2024 I honed in on an inner journey for myself I’d called a homecoming. I felt like I’d lost my spark, didn’t like the path I was on, and forgotten about the things that grounded me. I made a playlist of music I’d lost touch with that made me happy, which had a good chunk of MJ on it. I got back into taking photos, and was having a lot of fun taking pictures of shadows and lights again. I even started doing some shadow work and reading Carl Jung. I started to feel like my old self in a new way. I wasn’t at my best yet, but I regained a lot of confidence back and in February 25, I ended a five year relationship. One of the factors was that I always felt small around him and was constantly living in his shadow. So when Mayhem was released, I cannot even begin to describe the feeling of hearing Shadow of a Man, let alone the fact that Mayhem is essentially about returning to yourself and having your own back. These kinds of things have been happening throughout her career and it’s something I just embrace at this point. Whatever version of god I believe in, it’s definitely channeled through her music. What a gift. Also, Shadow just f*ing SLAPS. Those guitars. I melt every time. Plus I find Gaga to be at her peak when she channels MJ.
