Economy 53,220
https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/canada-population-statistics-update-september-2026 Canadas population has been revised up 300,000 and turns out did not shrink slightly over a few quarters as originally thought now at 41.8M After record breaking growth the Government put a hard break on immigration rates especially temporary residents (students and temporary work permits) and it was estimated the high rollover of expiring permits would exceed permanent new immigrants resulting in a temporary slight net loss Turns out temporary residents who left was less than estimated and the population has continued to grow albeit much slower than in the 2021 to 2023 boom This makes the slowdown in housing starts post housing bubble burst more concerning than before. It also means the improving GDP Per Capita and productivity growth has rebounded more modestly than first thought Edited Sunday at 05:10 PM by Economy
Delulu Rogers 7,678
Very strange to me how something like this could be miscalculated in the first place. We’re not talking a few tens of thousands. 300,000 is huge number. Why do I feel like they reported a decline in population to make people have faith in the new policies only now to backtrack and hope it won’t make much noise. That said, I have seen a noticeable difference in the amount of international students and drop in housing prices/rentals so something is working I guess. I mean, we cant rule out purposely misleading estimates for political reasons given how low the liberals were polling 1.5 years ago and given how unpopular the loose immigration policies had become That said, while I wouldnt rule it out or have have proof otherwise, Ill give them the benefit of the doubt it wasnt a conspiracy given were odly still in the stone ages for data collection when it comes to live tracking by the Government Stuff gets revised all the time including economic data sometimes by a lot when final data is actually in Estimates try to use snapshots, samples and outdated methods and when it isnt a full census the innital margin for error in data can be huge Tbf it isnt just Canada. US data revisions on stuff like the economy can also be pretty wild and this was before someone as sus as Trump was President...
