Like someone said before, this is very intentional. I think the line that bothered me the most was “my genes are blue”.

Do you have any sources for this? (genuinely. I'm not being condescending. because it doesn't line up with historical research I've done)

First peroxide based hair lighteners emerged very late 1800s.
The concept of the Aryan master race is first identified by the 1899 book The Foundations of the Nineteeth Century written by Houston Stewart Chamberlain. Chamberlain was a massive influence on and supporter of Hitler - dubbed "Hitler's John the Baptist". And it is this work which sets the Nordic race as the master race.
In America specifcally, eugenics became a major political force in the 20th century prior to the second world war. Even Woodrow Wilson was a racial eugenicist. Multiple states pushed for sterilisation laws. Womens Clubs in the deep south organised around the promotion of eugenics and curing defects in children through contraception.

The Gentlemen Prefer Blondes sterotype (which ironically has never been proven with statistical data, data infacts suggests the opposite) then emerges at the peak of Flapper culture in the Roaring 20s era. It was majorly tied to the nouveau rich class of men chasing peroxide blonde bimbos by works like Gentleman Prefer Blondes from 1925. The first reference to this stereotype is 1923 in a song. It then became a staple of Hollywood films in the interwar period.

Timing wise, I don't know what historical research you've done but they line up perfectly.

I’m sorry but this is not racism or N*zi rhetoric. It is simply pointing out that she is a beautiful woman which is due to her genetic history. You could easily say the same about a woman of colour. People who are calling others N*zis for simply having blonde hair and blue eyes are the racist ones.

The idea of "great genes" was popularised by eugenics.
Eugenics is a fundamental part of racism and nazi rhetoric.

There it is! Thanks for saying it plainly so we know to ignore whatever ignorance you decide to spew next.

I encourage everyone else on here who feels similarly to speak up like this one 💜 so the decent users on here can stop replying to you in good faith trying to get others to understand  and care about the deep, deep sh*t we're in right now.

Saying this while Border Patrol officers are indiscriminately rounding up Hispanic/latino people regardless of their immigration status and detaining them is legitimately callous and insane. Enjoy your unearned victim complex.

I'm really struggling to word a reply to you that won't get me WPs or permabanned.

Do you seriously believe that there is nothing happening to minorities in the US?

Are the documented cases of natural born non-white American citizens being detained by ICE raids made up?

Like please, show us what evidence you have to justify your claim that no race is struggling in the US.

The willful ignorance (and frankly, racism) in this thread…I’d laugh if it didn’t prove how mainstream anti-intellectualism (as well as media illiteracy) has become :wtf:

Using a white, blonde, blue eyed person to flaunt their “genes” for a jean ad is at best a racist troll marketing gimmick and at worst a full fledged Nazi dogwhistle. Did no one ever study Nazi propaganda or Eurocentrism at school? Has no one studied how white people have been historically depicted in advertisements compared to other groups?

If users here can attribute Morgan Wallen and other milquetoast artist’s mainstream success to the rise in Trumpism/global conservatism, then I know you have the cognitive ability to connect the eugenics subtext of this ad to our current sociopolitical moment.

This ad wouldn’t be a problem if it featured women of different ethnicities. The fact that AE purposefully chose Sydney Sweeney, whose success/allure has also been attributed to the resurgence of hard right conservative values, to stir up debate proves that the campaign is working and that there are no consequences for being a racist troll at best or a Nazi at worst. This very debate is a flashpoint moment that exemplifies how far right our culture has become and how we’ve normalized such attitudes.

Which interestingly comes back to why the denim reference color is blue (that goes to the history of its creation and how directly refers to “blue blood” class of people).

Also, the history behind the eagle as the animal and its implications behind the representation of the American Independence history. When you see everything together and make the connection points, we can see how problematic and serious is the debate actually. For anybody who still thinks it’s ok to put out ads like that, it’s worth a research.

Honestly it's a stupid little ad about her being attractive. I don't think the brand ever thought there would debate about Nazism..... but I get the criticism once you put everything together especially considering the campaign quote and "American Eagle" brand.
