Sydney Sweeney’s controversial American Eagle ad

The marketing strategies behind these types of campaigns...hear me out...are pretty intentional. All the time. Always. The company's product and marketing team evidently underwent discussions around strategy, narrative, content, and all of that got approved by their programs that would sign off on introducing new products and campaigns. Anyone who thinks that these were done just because and without intent wasn't paying attention in school. And based on the comments here, it shows.

also the company was founded by two jewish men (the Silverman brothers), and the CEO Jay Schottenstein is also jewish. I DOUBT any of them would be like "okay yeah lets put some nazi-ism into our ads"

Stephen Miller comes from a Jewish family. That logic doesn't work anymore unfortunately.

This is my Hannah Montana™️ lipgloss.

What does that have to do with Nazi ism like yall make thins up

Hair colour (blonde), eye colour (blue) followed by 'sydney has GREAT GENES'.

It's very on the nose, but subtle enough for not everyone to realise

This is the most absurd thing I’ve read this week.  Beyond.  Lighten up folks.  Not everything is Nazi.  Maybe she’s got great genes because she’s considered hot. And she looks good in her AE Jeans.  Maybe it’s simple as that.  A beautiful black woman could have done this same ad with basically the same script and no one would say a damn thing.

Are we going to pretend that "having good genes" isn't a common saying to refer to attractive people?

Yep. It's very common, hell even TMZ has that "good genes or good docs?" thing where they talk about how hot people are and if they've gotten plastic surgery or not

TMZ is the devil, but still... it's a common saying

Ive seen an YouTuber discussing about it yesterday and that makes a lot of sense. It’s basically pure subtle kind of marketing and it looks BAD, specially for someone who is constantly and basically referenced as hot white American girl.
There’s so many layers in all of that but still, most of ppl will not see it because that’s on purpose; the brand will play it low to keep appealing to their target audience and not being so direct to the affected ones won’t necessarily feel the racism.

Yet we can see people here already not seeing the problem with it. We are really and surelydoomed.

tbh I wish they did this campaign with like, 4 different famous women of differing races. that could have been cool and nipped this in the bud

the joke is that she's a hot blonde with big naturals and that she has great "genes" for making her so hot. this pun has been done so many times. is it brilliant advertising? no. but it's not saying "she is hot and better because she's white", it's just saying she's hot

So the joke is that she's the stereotypical archetype of aryan attractiveness and that these are great genes. But the joke isn't that she's the stereotypical archetype of aryan attractiveness and that these are great genes.

Interesting.

People, that's how propaganda works. You don't see the problem.

A white, blonde, beautiful woman talking about having great genes in this day and age should ring a bell.

Omg you guys are so tiring. Go touch some grass.

dude I'm all for pointing out actual dogwhistles, but this is a massive stretch. it's not that deep. the joke is that she's a hot blonde with big naturals and that she has great "genes" for making her so hot. this pun has been done so many times. is it brilliant advertising? no. but it's not saying "she is hot and better because she's white", it's just saying she's hot

it's not that deep. people can stretch anything they want into portraying something awful, and I think that can be detrimental when it comes to pointing out actual, intentional dogwhistling (which I don't think this is)

edit: btw I have a college degree in Marketing in case anyone wants to call me delusional etc

You seriously don’t think they would put a plausibly deniable dog whistle into an ad for the sake of ragebaiting engagement and drawing eyes to the ad? Lol

Sure.. only in America people discuss this non sense about race. Literally leaving America and going to any country to take a break is so nice because people are just so ****ing annoying about this ****..
