Yes, but not in the same way that a commercial aircraft does. This is where the key difference between these two sectors comes into play. There simply is less rigidity and a less strict set of rules for private planes than there are commercial. 

All aircraft have to abide by general rules set in place by the FAA. However, there is a far stricter set of rules that commercial planes must follow. Because commercial planes carry more people and clock far more flight hours than private planes, they are required to undergo maintenance checks far more often than planes in private use. Beyond that, the airlines themselves actually help regulate this as well by creating specific policies that mandate safety checks on a rotation that actually exceeds those of what the FAA requires. Pilots in the world of private aviation are also not required to have as many flight hours for certification as those who fly commercial. 

(Fun fact on that last point: almost every major airline in the US' minimum required flight hours for pilots seeking employment with them vastly exceeds the minimum requirement set by the FAA, in a couple cases by nearly double.)

In the world of private flying, the planes must still undergo certification and must have safety checks done, but they are not required to do it nearly as often. The regulations for private aviation are also more flexible and can vary strongly depending on the type of aircraft in question and its operator. In the world of private aviation, the owner of the plane often can perform their own maintenance as well rather than a contracted company or the manufacturer doing so. 

So in short, yes, they do have to abide by FAA guidelines, but those guidelines are different (and less strict/rigid) for private aircraft than they are for commercial aircraft.

It's not ridiculous at all. You're completely sane for having doubts in light of recent news. You just have to remember that the odds are stupendously in your favor in spite of what you're heard. You also have to be proactive against your anxiety too. Have distractions. Talk it out with other people. Just remember you're not alone and this isn't by any means a common incident.
