There have been 2 close calls already in my country and we've barely even started the year . Allow me to shed some slight on this specific accident. Unlike the mid-air collision in DC, this particular kind of accident is not uncommon. The aviation industry operates in 3 sectors: commercial (your passenger planes flown by American, Delta, etc), military, and private/civllian (privately owned aircraft). Accidents in the first two sectors—commercial and military—are very uncommon, especially accidents that are fatal. However, there are on average over 1,000 accidents per year in private aviation. The reasons for this are many but primarily it comes down to three factors: 1. Private aviation has less stringent regulation than commercial aviation 2. The pilots who fly in this sector are often less experienced than in commercial aviation 3. There are hundreds of different kinds of aircraft used in private aviation whereas there are fewer than a dozen different models of aircraft in current use in commercial aviation (and most of them are split between only two companies) All of this combines together to make this sector of aviation more prone to accidents. This particular crash is exceptionally horrific because of the circumstances (especially where it crashed), but don’t let it’s timing make you think this is symptomatic of something widespread happening in the industry. There is NO wider trend or widespread thing happening in the industry period, but even if there was, this particular crash has nothing to do with commercial flights. This appears to be a mechanical failure, and if that is the case then the responsibility will fall onto whoever owns the plane as it is privately owned and operated. This sector of aviation is completely separate from commercial and the regulations as such are also incredibly different. The timing is horrible, but there is no equivalence in the accidents. DC is a shocking, uncommon event whereas this, albeit still horrific, is unfortunately not uncommon in the world of civil aviation.

I always get a ton of anxiety too. I hate it. But I just allow myself to relinquish control of the situation. Try deep breathing exercises. Pre-download a few podcasts or other listening or visual media. Just cast everything out, it's just you and the podcast/whatever. You got this.
