Aga Gydal 2,958 Posted March 19 Share Posted March 19 I was torn between ARTPOP and Chromatica, even though I definitely listen to The Fame the least. Revisiting TF though, I just can’t knock it out yet. The string of absolute bangers with sharp breezy lyrics are actually top notch Gaga. I’m not touching BTW and TFM is too seminal to get knocked out anytime soon either.  ARTPOP has so much cultural baggage to me even though its high notes trump literally anything on Chromatica. AP definitely represents Gaga’s “old guard” way of making albums: cram it with bangers, and come up with a theme or album concept later that matches how she’s feeling as an artist. Chromatica is a much more cohesive body of work, with every song being in service to the overall storyline of rediscovering your happiness through dance. ARTPOP’s “I could mean anything” always felt like a scotch tape idea that never matched the sum of its parts. I get it as a “concept,” but the songs on ARTPOP are just a hodge podge of tracks inspired by wildly different things, making for a super uneasy listen (with some skips).  Chromatica’s held back only by its samey production and is the only Gaga album that stuck to a uniform sound, which feels new to us. It may have treaded familiar ground sonically but so did ARTPOP with its EDM/dubstep inspo. I think I’d still take Chromatica’s euphoric consistency and thematic strength over ARTPOP’s range of jagged EDM though.  ARTPOP gets my vote for being a weaker album, even though its top tracks are Gaga at her best.
