What annoyed me about HoG

If they cut all of Leto’s scenes they’d have enough time to flesh out the murder aspects. :coffee:

It wasn't a very good movie, tbh. I wish it was more cohesive, both in story and in the performances. All good actors but playing in completely different registers.

I think a lot of people take issue with this so you're not alone.

Personally, think the film should've started from the wedding and a lot of the middle scenes (especially regarding Paolo) were unnecessary. I think the final third part of the film deserves just as much attention as the first two thirds and I agree, I would've loved to have seen more of the murder and aftermath. I think the film would've seen less criticism if it did focus less on tax issues, fake Gucci merch and Paolo and more on the murder.

Saying that, I still love Gaga's performance and think it's her best to date so I entirely blame Ridley for his inability of storytelling which is often flat (same issue with The Last Duel tbh).

In terms of performances: Al Pacino > Gaga >>> Salma > Adam >>>>>>>>>>>> Jared > Jeremy (he just gave up with his accent and reverted to being British for one sequence, which I'm surprised isn't mentioned more)

I think it sounds like it is lacking something cause the whole movie was supposed to be narrated by Gaga and i read somewhere Ridley removed it last minute.

Definitely. Plus the movie went from Patricia and Maurizio being fine to murder in like 2 scenes between them. It felt very very rushed after the scene with the photo album.

I wish the entire movie had been filmed like the courtroom scene at the end. It felt so alive, so compelling, compared to the inertia of the first 9 tenths of the story. But perhaps this was Scott’s intention. When Gaga says in interviews that she loves that Scott was brave for allowing her to be ugly in this movie, maybe he also intended the movie itself to be...kinda ugly (despite the high fashion and exquisite location shots). The scene in the beginning, when Patrizia and Mauricio are in a gondola, looks the complete antithesis of romantic: it looks like a horror scene, all foggy and with the Venetian architecture looking gothic and dirty.

I think I have to watch this movie again, maybe the ugliness and lifelessness is on purpose, as a critique on the fashion industry itself.

Jeremy gave what was supposed to be a promo interview to a local newspaper here, and he came scross as if he was still in character. He was condescending towards Gaga (because her name was Gaga) and the movie as a hole, and he was happy to admit that he'd done it for the money. Classy.

I went to see it on Monday and let me just say that I want my money back :huntyga:

I almost fell asleep half way in and thought about walking out early, my ADHD a$$ was so bored

Also watching Jared do that Super Mario type of delivery on his role made me feel so nauseous :vegas:

I was hesitant to go see it since we had to wait so long for it to be released in Australia and the reviews were average. I ended up going to see it and I really didn’t enjoy it apart from the performances of the cast (mainly Gaga who carried the film) I couldn’t stand the pacing and editing. I was bored halfway through the film and the time jump at the end infuriated me, we didn’t get to see the funeral, how the Gucci family reacted, the investigation. Nothing.

I really felt like the first half of the film was too slow paced and so many scenes could’ve been cut. I didn’t feel like Gaga and Adam had that spark of chemistry compared to Bradley either, the romantic scenes did nothing for me it didn’t feel believable. As others have said this would’ve been better as like a HBO limited series with 6 episodes or so.

hm yeah it was badly structured, had no point of view from the writers/Director, and just showed scenes but told no story at all. no story, might as well be used footage for a documentary, would make more sense. people talking about what happened and they show couple scenes from this movie, it's all it would be good for.

Gaga shines as an actress, I was worried about that, now I believe in her 100%

Al Pacino is a legend

I felt VERY similarly to the views expressed in this thread, upon my first viewing. But I went to go see it again and just accepted the movie as it was, and I REALLY enjoyed it a lot more.

I do think there is something...off... about the film as whole. It's as if they filmed too many scenes and couldn't decide what to put in. And the last 20 min (or so) felt very rushed and incomplete, especially the final scenes.

BUT, now after my second viewing, I accept the film as it is and Ridley's vision. We got a blockbuster performance from Gaga and iconic

Quotes

So if you have only seen it once, I implore you to watch again without expectation or anticipation. Just let yourself be transported into the crazy world of these characters.

I do think the movie was promoted and advertised the wrong way and created an expectation of a murder movie, when it's really a family drama with comedic moments.

I definitely would have loved to see that. So much context for it all to come to a head at the end (which I like but also dislike lol). I think it was a good place to stop, but also wouldn't mind there being some documentary or something to come out that covers what happens after it :laughga:

Idk, I have conflicting feelings about it too lol.
