Okay I have to come back to this because the other reason these things irritate me is: what the f,uck am I supposed to do about it?? Feeling like I'm never doing well enough is a major source of my depression and it's caused by this constant reminder that we are all (apparently) individually responsible for the demise of our entire planet. I recycle everything I can, compost all my scraps, never leave anything running if I'm not in the room, try not to waste water, I've been vegetarian for 10 years, only use power-saving lightbulbs, I try to be mindful of supporting companies that are eco friendly and don't test on animals, I rarely travel out of town, never buy new clothes for myself, I don't buy anything I might need to throw out, the salon I work at has just started a huge initiative to go fully sustainable, I drive a small car that doesn't use a lot of fuel...

But no matter what I do, under this mindset and this kind of pressure, it is never going to be good enough because my carbon footprint is still 'however many tonnes a year'. But I can't f.ucking afford a hybrid. I can't afford a house deposit no matter how hard I try to save, let alone any kind of eco-friendly power source like solar etc. I can't afford to eat only clean boujee food grown sustainably. I don't have the energy between my insomnia and a 40 hr work week to grow my own food and bike everywhere and live off grid. This is what I mean by 'there is no ethical consumption under capitalism'. Because what, the hell, are, we, supposed, to, DO? We live in an economy destroyed by two global economic crises, where hardly anyone can afford to own their own home, family with two parent incomes can barely get by, and we're constantly told that we are the ones destroying the world. That we have a responsibility, for our short lives on earth, to forgo any small comforts or moments of joy for the sake of the planet.

Well I barely have anything enjoyable in my life as is, so if I want to buy a BK burger once a month, or go to an amusement park once every two years, or travel overseas and go to a Lady Gaga concert (before/after covid), or if I want to eat a bag of corn chips or leave the heater on overnight during the peak of Winter, or drive my car to the supermarket instead of buying a bicycle, then I'm not going to sit here and worry myself about my responsibility for destroying the planet. I'm going to enjoy some small comforts in life while I can.

Don't blame yourselves and each other down here in the working class. Blame the billionaires with mega-yachts, having pissing matches to see who can get to space first, heavily polluting not only our planet but the space around it. Blame the massive corporations that pollute HUGE, incomprehensible amounts every year when they don't need to. No wonder the whole world is facing a mental health epidemic

Edit:  I'm not attacking you OP btw! I think this tool is very interesting, and like I said before, I do think it's important to be mindful    just also protect your mental health guys. Don't be like me and let this sh.it get on top of you and crush the happiness out of you

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

This is all very interesting, and it's good to remain informed, but I'm not going to feel guilty about my personal carbon footprint when I try my best to be sustainable within my own means, and when billion dollar companies are the ones doing 90% of the worlds pollution. There is no ethical consumption under capitalism, and all that.

Also the personal carbon footprint was invented by BP to offset the guilt onto the average person and divert attention away from big corporations like themselves. Yes the BP who had the massive oil spill in 2010. BP's annual carbon footprint is something like 370 million tonnes a year.

Here's a chart of the 20 firms that are responsible for 1/3 of the entire world's carbon emissions

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/oct/09/revealed-20-firms-third-carbon-emissions

Thats a very poor way of looking at it. Their product that is consumed may make up that much carbon emissions but its what they are used for in all the other industries, transportation etc as well

U cannot only look at the company extracting the resource. If ur gonna use that resource and burn it or turn it into something ur also part of the issue

"Directly linked" is not the same as those few companies alone doing jt

I find that thinking problematic because it it implies no one else has to do anything because its all on them and what every other company or person does makes no difference. Meanwhile our entire civilization runs on fossil fuels still :duck:

We need to make governments invest on green renewables like its war time, other companies that manufacture their products a certain way need to be regulated and held accountable (and not just the largest corporations, small and medium sized industries add up too)... there needs to be greater incentives in place for those that can to walk, bike or take public transport when possible, discourage waste etc etc etc

I get the fossil fuel companies start the chain by extracting the resource in the first place but when all of civilization runs on it and willingly buys it, the issue goes beyond just the fossil fuel companies themselves but really its everything. In fact if u suddenly banned them society would collapse.

@PartySick are u trying to expose me given i have the highest number so far? :sis:

JK, my real number doesnt reflect this quiz tho. On a bunch of questions u have to do some serious rounding to the closest answer which always made me have to round up. Not to mention some questions like the size of home u live in doesnt even take into account how many ppl share that space and my commute is no where near as long as whats programed on there :rip:

Also i take long flights like once every 3 years but theres no option for less than once a year. Its either none or 1 so i picked 1

Im probably at least 20% or 30% lower than the number it gave me

Yes. For example, I'm keeping my carbon footprint low by:

Spoiler

NOT causing oil spills due to cutting costs or easily fixable but costly mistakes

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_oil_spills

and also by:

Spoiler

NOT deliberately hiding critical climate change science and spreading misinformation instead

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/exxon-knew-about-climate-change-almost-40-years-ago/

and some further stuff would be:

Spoiler

if I ever got extremely, obscenely rich like some of those companies are, I would NOT look to earn even more by destroying the environment DESPITE THE FACT THAT WE ALL KNOW BY NOW THAT CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL

and as a bonus:

Spoiler

I am also NOT  pushing forward the agenda of the oil/gas/coal industry by saying that Nuclear is dangerous when in fact it is both the safest and the cleanest energy choice we have at the moment if we REALLY want to do something about climate change

So long ggd, it was nice while it lasted.

Well obviously corporations and governments are the ones that will need to get their sh*t together :bear:

It's still kinda interesting to see how big of a part we all individually play in the issue though :partysick:

Yes u listed all the stuff corporations are guilty of congrats. I never argued agaibst any of this... and if that list u gave is all that was wrong with the planet ud have a point

But that list is far from complete

Listing everything corps do wrong doesnt prove they are the only ones that gotta change when the list that includes so many others is so much bigger than just this

Its that kind of attitude that slows down progress cuz ppl only focus on what others are doing wrong then nothing gets done

Just cuz u have individuals and companies with a disproportionate amount of power and impact doesnt mean u use that as an excuse for everyone else to do nothing. Governments, smaller and medium sized companies and even individuals in smaller ways have a role to play too. The economy and our problems are so much more intertwined and complex than just corporations alone

But keep that attitude. Maybe somehow it will help the planet... NOT
