Billboard: Ed’s debut is a “disappointment”

“Andrew Unterberger: A top 5 bow for Sheeran is hardly a disaster, but it is a disappointment, particularly given how all-out Sheeran went with the promotional blitz -- the high-concept music video, the week of Late Late Show hosting, the extensive teasing pre-release -- and how big an early airplay boost he's being given, with the song already No. 11 on Radio Songs in its first full week of release. Given all that, to still have four songs separating him and the top spot marks a bit of a soft landing for Ed.“

ARTPOP-era, I fear. Oh is that an Applause tribute? :haroon:

The song is basic and people are finally holding him accountable to step it up...this was not it and the imagery was a complete knock off of the Weeknd RECENT era...

It is not realistic to expect him to release smash hits year after year - that type of fame is not sustainable for anyone.

I really hate when they have staffers commenting on stuff like unless it’s like a retrospective look at charts from a decade ago. It comes across like sports- where people win or lose. This is music and art for entertainment purposes. It’s so weird how we’ve allowed the two to get so intertwined but of course it’s business.

didn’t he do like 100+ interviews to secure the radio play? :haroon:

Okay I didn't expect this kind of negativity from Billboard happening to Ed Sheeran. I mean he's like the male counterpart of Taylor Swift in music industry for GP. I dislike both of them tho.:sure:

Nnn this gives me 2013 ptsd :chica:

I have learned not to pile upon an artist when they're doing lower than expectations.

Just have to look at our own backyard.

Also the media and public are QUICK to shift narrative. Just a low first week and he's apparently 'over'

Ironically it's the first Ed song I've liked in a long time

Pretty sure this reeks of irony, didn’t he go on a whole rant talking about how “Cheap Thrills” was a rip off of “Shape of You” a few years back??
