I wasn’t a LM back then. Whenever I watch videos from that time, I feel so nostalgic even tho I haven’t really experienced this. But somehow it feels like I’ve been there.
so my question: how did you experience this time? I’m really curious about how other LMs felt.

i oodly have this same feeling

not as much the btwb but the entire ARTPOP era to me feels so nostalgic when really i was just making a parody of applause for an elementary school project musical rendition of jonah and the big fish

hard to even fathom which parts you should believe

The BTWB was an exciting time to be a fan. Seeing the sketch of the stage, then seeing the stage in person. The drama with police in Jakarta, someone shouting "F*** THE POLICE" in the crowd.

Waiting for the iTunens Festival performance at the start of the ARTPOP era was my best fan moment. Felt truly united with other fans in loving the songs, loving the performances, and behind hyped about the album.

Oh man...

These were the most exciting years ever in the Gaga world.

We all almost had a stroke because of the excitement when ARTPOP was announced. People hate the expression “break the internet” but the announcement literally did break the internet for a moment. :cryga: and when Aura leaked... gosh, I remember hearing it on the radio and thinking “the host is getting sued by UMG” :enigma:

Gaga was everywhere. Literally everywhere. There's no way you could go out and not hear about her. It felt like the earth was small compared to her, like WTHHHHHHHHHH her level of fame was beyond everything. And as fans, it was paradise. :kara: and then the ARTPOP era didn't work as intended...

Born this way: Super invested. Lady Gaga was an enigma and a place from which I could move forward and find out who I was meant to be. I wanted to go to the show, but resented that such a fuss was made about it. My whole cultural activities became about activism for gay rights and I believe this album made a huge difference in making that happen globally.

ARTPOP: Detached. I didn't feel like I was being allowed to make art and too I wasn't invested in what Gaga was making cause I felt my interest in her and her art had reached a cadence, where I didn't need to stop relating to her, but I needed time away from what I thought was a toxic culture that was created out of BTW which had become unmitigated with ARTPOP. Truly it wasn't unmitigated, it was a reversion of sorts, but that was also a negative considering BTW had so much prosperous posterity.

I went to the BTWB, and I loved it so much, I haven't been to any others. I didn't go to ARTPOP ball, as my life situation was different and further away from the city. If I could go back I might've liked to go to AB, but I can't say for sure. After all, it doesn't really matter, it's just a show by a superstar entertainer.

Gaga's career feels inescapable in it's cultural impact around. I don't even know if she's aware of her impact with the shrinks she has.

The BTW era a genuine once in a lifetime experience. It was thrilling to see Gaga every where whether it was on TV performing, giving interview, or the many many photo shoots we got. The hype around every music video was indescribable, they were literally cultural events. I remember Gaga nights on Fuse and MTV  Then of course the buildup to the tour itself. The fact my date was canceled is still one of the saddest experiences of my life.

On the other hand, the ARTPOP era was a terrible experience for me. I remember starting off excited, especially when the iTunes Fest happened, but it did not take long for that excitement to end. Everyone was hateful toward Gaga, even publication's that had been on her side before. Almost every day there was something bad happening and it was so unbearable. The vibe around the album is why I have a hard time listening to it because it was such a tumultuous time both as a fan and personally.

You remind me that it's such a wonderful thing to love.

Yes. Born This Way I was the biggest fan I've ever been. I checked news for her constantly. I was living for the lead up to the album. I watched the Best Buy stream where she signed CDs. Etc.

All the way leading up to mid ARTPOP era and then I started to dip into just a casual fan to which is what I identify as today; this is just my choice place to talk about pop music mostly because I have other places to go for the other stuff I listen to.

Born This Way: everything felt inspirational. She was getting hated on left & right, but it felt wholesome to be like “we are better than fighting back”. I was also 15 and came out during this era, so it felt liberating.

ARTPOP: just pure alcoholism and party mode. I was 18 when this came out, so I was drinking when not studying. The mood also started to turn into a more “fighting back” tone. Fans being shady started to pop in around this era. A lot of fights happened, but I think we all still had a good time

I discovered Gaga in this era. I would of been like what 7. Not the most appropriate but i took the lyrics to literally and didn't get the references.

not to be negative but here I go lmao What's funny is I rememba born this way era being a disappointment and ARTPOP being an even bigger disappointment and yet I look back on them as my 2 fav gaga albums

Btw felt l preachy to me in the moment and  ARTPOPfelt like a mess and a betrayal bc she was letting go of the gaga facade/persona bit by bit and I felt like she was a totally new person

I think btw triggerrd my self hatred cuz I was still closeted and she was being so vocal about lgbtq rights, and ARTPOP was tainted by the gp turning on her and focusing on tearing her down. I hated seeing katy "outdo" her and I hated that she was becoming "less successful" mainstream wise bc I idolized gaga and had no life of my own so her successes/"failures" became my own lmao. Howeverrrr, I look back on them with so much love and again they're my 2 fav albums. I think with those 2 albums, as a fan, I had to let go of my naive, youthful expectations that gaga would stay stuck in TF/M persona/aesthetic/level of success foreva.

Edit: BUT REGARDLESS, the fashion and looks were incredible, the videos and performances were amazing, I saw the artrave 2x and LOvED it, her power despite dwindling on the charts was undeniable, and I forever love her and definitely stanned so hard despite my mixed emotions about her direction

I wasn't stanning so much during BTW so I can't comment a lot on that, but I remember Gaga starting to be overexposed and the blackout 2012 era.

ARTPOP was really exciting. The main things I remember are the Applause video release, the strange Marina Abramovic video, iTunes Festival and controversial SXSW performance, GUY release (amazing) and eventually watching the Paris ArtRave Finale livestream (an incredible night). I especially loved the fashion, particularly towards the end of the era and crossover with C2C (the UK / Japan art goth fashion was bomb).

I didn't really care for BTWB because I knew I wasn't able to go then, but of course I was exited about ARTPOP.

even though ARTPOP was the peak of hate towards haha it was the peak of my love for her and her art. she was making music nobody has made before. it was fresh and experimental and polarizing and its barely getting the love it deserved. if she had a team that was there for her it would've been a huge era
