Taking this definition at its word, then, would suggest that it is possible for a person of any race to experience racism if someone treats them badly for this reason – even white people. But this definition of racism leaves out one crucial element: The power structures that uphold and perpetuate racism. Racism doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It exists within a hierarchical structure with power at its core. Racism only works because one group has power and other groups do not. And it is white people who – historically, and in the West at least – hold the power when it comes to racial divides, thanks to centuries of Eurocentric beliefs and structures that continue to privilege and centre whiteness. They ignore any and all serious, factual discussion of racism, and keep falling back on the same exhausted argument that an anecdote here and there somehow proves racism against white people even as white people as a group control 90% or more of Congress, similar figure if not higher of Fortune 500 companies, and nearly all the wealth in this country. Absolutely pathetic and just shows they're intellectually inept at having any factual conversation based in reality and not alternative facts. The term "racist" itself in modern day basically has dual meaning. Which is why you often see people distinguish racism and systematic racism (as far as I understand). I think the argument, at least from what I've read, is that the term "racism" and "prejudice" are becoming the two terms to distinguish this issue. If I'm understanding, racism is now being used to describe white people versus everyone else, whereas "prejudice" is the term people are looking for when someone who isn't white demonstrates the "racist" behavior towards a white person.
