Isidro Guevara 821
Was it released as a single because of the backlash to Born This Way (song)? Judas was considered the most "classic Gaga" track off BTW back in 2011 and the most recognizable as Lady Gaga. I've read that many fans were disappointed with the lead single (BTW) because it was "too corny" or not instantly catchy as/ very different to her past singles. Did Gaga and her label try to compensate that with Judas? Judas sounds mostly like her past dance hits (e.g. Poker Face, Bad Romance) and therefore was considered more 'friendly' and digestible than releasing MTN, TEOG, or any other song from BTW as a second single. They thought it'd do better than those since it's more "poppier" and has that signature Gaga sound. What do you think of this observation? I believe Judas was released as a single due to its throwback to her past hits and familiarity and to create more controversy and make the BTW era seem "legendary". Ricardo 7,884
because choices... if they wanted the Red One sound I still don't understand how they didn't release Scheisse which is BY FAR superior

Scheibe would have been the best choice for a second single. trolly troll troll

Antoni 5,332
I think she just wanted all of the buzz she got by releasing a song called Judas so close to Easter. My name isn't Timmers

Did Gaga and her label try to compensate that with Judas? No, not at all. For two reasons: - first, Born This Way was hugely successful. It topped Billboard Hot 100 for 6 weeks I think. So, they had absolutely no reason to fight a backlash that never happened. - never, ever, has Gaga released any single according to her fans' reaction. Ever. During the Born This Way era she even asked her fans what the next single would be, and that never happened. The fans' reaction is never a factor in Gaga's career choices. Yes, Judas was chosen because it was Easter and Gaga was still the queen of controversies and they wanted to keep the headlines (and specially because the album was about to be released). And yes, because Judas was promoted by several magazines as "Bad Romance from the future". But remember, the album hadn't been released by then, so there was no "she should release this instead of that" discussion.

I think that's why the label didn't believe in releasing it? It's also a swear word but I think if it was titled "Single Prayer (Scheiße)" it could've done well! If she wanted REAL controversy release Scheiße!!! I'll WRECK U right Up...G.U.Y.!!!🌋💥
Brecht 7
It is true. A lot of people didn't like Born This Way and wanted Bad Romance part 2 and that's why Judas came. And with easter coming they saw it as a great opportunity to profit off some controversy that ended up backlashing.
Rocket Number 9 1,708
Judas was a single because we can't have a Gaga era without questionable choices Although I love the video, I'll forever hate Judas for its unnecessary backlash (why the f*CK release a song like that on Easter?) and also for completely ruining any chance the subsequent singles had to go #1. It is without a doubt her worst single. If Judas wasn't released, TEOG could've been #1. Also, as far as I remember, Gaga actually Scheiße as a single but her label cut that short. So yeah...
