The label wanted a ballad because Lorde was blowing up on the radio at that moment

*Adele

Lorde only had one hit and it wasn't a ballad :vegas:

I like the live versions. But my question is why the official needed to be sung in that ridiculous voice

She has the EXACT same voice in:

- Til It Happens To You

- Diamond Heart

- Joanne

- John Wayne

- Perfect Illusion

- Million Reasons

- Angel Down

- Grigio Girl

- Shallow

She mentioned both artists in the Howard Stern interview. She was referring more to the general trends of pop radio with Adele being popular for her ballads, and Lorde being popular for stripped back, midtempo production. Sure, Lorde had one hit but it was a BIG one and contributed to the shift to pop minimalism which ARTPOP distinctly was *not*.

Little Fighter

The real question is why were Fashion, Donatella, and Mary Jane Holland on ARTPOP

Dope doesn't fit on ARTPOP and shouldn't be there. Simply cuz of its sound.

It sounds great and has some really deep lyrics, but "i need you more than dope" is such a clumsy line :rip:  It ruins the song for me, it's not well written (that part of the song).

And it's so depressing, literally the opposite of any other song on the album.

Fashion! is top 3 on the album with Applause and Gypsy.  It would be top 4 if DWUW wasn't ruined for us with the whole R. Kelly thing.

That was the point :air: I can't believe Im logged into a Gaga-fandom forum. Looks like no one knows anything about ARTPOP.

And saying that Dope it's a not well written song I- You should check your ears cause clearly something's off.

I am going to guess that the record label told her that a song about being famous and wanting to be with your fans is not relatable/maudlin/won't sell. They probably pressured her to re-write it and make it more relatable, so she made it about addiction and love.  I think it's kind of cool that Gaga invited two fans/monsters to help her re-write the lyrics

It's not. Label wanted her to have pretty written radio kind of ballad like I Wanna Be With You but she decided to give them middle finger and rewrote it as Dope. She said it herself.

Sugar, spice, and everything nice.

It’s a painful, messy ballad for a painful, messy era.

I honestly think Dope is perfect for ARTPOP, and one of the better songs.

WTF, she says "p-p-p-poker face" FORTY TIMES in Poker Face, and it's still an amazingly written song

Oh no no, there is a blatant difference. It sounds like she's stumbling around an apartment with a sinus infection and phlegm.

Get the pinot ready, because it's turtle time.

First of all, yes obviously "that's the point!!11" of Dope being depressing.  That doesn't mean it FITS on ARTPOP.

2nd of all, I clearly said that the line "NEED YOU MORE THAN DOPE" is sloppy and imo it's not good writing, the rest of the song (lyrically) is stellar.

You should check your eyes cause clearly you can't read

Well that doesn't make any sense. The point of Dope being such a raw an depressing song it's not about that itself, it's about it's location on the album, and that's why it fits on ARTPOP. The placement, just after Mary Jane Holland (A song about drugs) and right before Gypsy (wich is more of an optimistic song) it's really important in this proyect. Most of the party-rave sounds on the album are used as a metaphor to hide a deeper meaning; Swine is the perfect example of that. It's not a "dance and party" album, it's actually way deeper than that, and Dope is the exact moment you hit the lowest point of the message. For you to say that it doesn't fit on this album based only on the sound of it,  just because it's not an electronic-house song, really shows how deeply uninformed about this album you are.

About that "Need you more than Dope" line, I just can't understand what you mean by sloppy and not good writing. It's literally what she means.  It's a song about needing someone so much, that your love is way more important than the drugs you are addicted to. A raw and sad message that creates the base of ARTPOP.

And sadly, I can read all the shallow things you say about the song on this topic.
