Does #1 really matter that much?

No because nowadays all it takes is buying radio spins and a good streaming deal to achieve it, which are the two things that always play against Gaga when it comes to charting. That's why it's nice to see Shallow go #1, it had a very genuine chart run.

I personally have never cared for chart success. I truly believe it’s irrelevant to Gaga at this point in her career.

But sis this #1 BETTER keeps Little Chartsters satisfied for at least another 8 years. :vegas:

So, here we are with 4 number #1 hits for our Lady, but I have to say it. Does it really matter that much?

It seem a bit like a vanity goal of sorts. Bad Romance never went #1 but it's clearly Gaga's biggest song.

being on the Hot 100 by itself is a good indicator of sucess and being the number one song says a lot about you, but in the future do people really remember that song for being number one or the most played?

But I can see how being number one is important for new artists. I would say they were more significant in the first days of Gag's career than now.

When legends are talked about often their catalogue success is mentioned so it does build a legacy so I say it matters in that sense

However a #1 is not the best way to measure singles success as many factors will influence whether a song goes #1 or not such as competition during its peak, and how much of the songs success is concentrated in a single week vs having more success spread out over longer time etc

I think top 10s are a better measure tbh. Most big hits WILL reach top 10 but many big hits won't go #1 if the timing of the peak isn't right. It's a hit and miss

There's songs that were lesser hits than Bad Romance that went #1 but bad romance in the US peaked at the same time as Tik Tok the biggest hit of the year so it got blocked

Also since the charts count sales, radio and streams, another factor is how close to eachother do these different factors peak...

For example if by the time radio airplay is maxed out sales and streams are already largely dead, the song likely won't be #1.... But if these things peak closer together at the same time a #1 is more likely

Peaks are a funny thing with a lot of variables. Many of Gaga's hits were as big as Katy Perry's #1 singles if you look at their sales and stuff... But Katy for example got pretty lucky that she never had huge competition right at the moment her songs would peak and so several #1s in a row occured

Gaga had a lot of big hits but a lot of them had bad timing on peaks and didn't go as high as they could have

But if so many artists do that then it's still a relative competition and so a #1 is still impressive

Nope.

For example Beyoncé's 2 biggest albums didn't have a #1 song. Bruce Springsteen never had one etc...

I still think Poker Face is her biggest song not Bad Romance. Bad Romance just established her Gaga aesthetic and was a big hit but it wasnt bigger than poker face...

Also they matter now that she got one again otherwise it wouldnt :poot:

I think WW Bad Romance outsold Poker Face actually if I'm not mistaken. It's her biggest world wide hit

If your taking in North America tho yes I'd say commercially it was her biggest hit

Here in Canada I can definitely say Poker Face followed by Just Dance were by far her biggest

Poker face also spent 8 or 9 weeks at #1 here in Canada!

In Gaga's career, it doesn't matter as much. The GP don't exactly care about #1's. Nor do the stans as much. Gaga already has accolades that most artists are striving to achieve. She's already achieved industry crossover and a very successful one at that, from music to film.

I hope she continues acting, choose good scripts instead of bandwagoning with Marvel because she still hasn't solidify her status as an actress. So, deeper characters may help her achieve that.

We all want her to continue with putting out pop music. Further expanding her discography.

Right now, the number of #1's will only look impressive when singing competitions introduce her by listing out her achievements before her performance like the British X-Factor etc.

Beyoncé hasn't had a #1 in awhile because she doesn't put her stuff on spotify lol. Lemonade and Everything Is Love were released on Tidal. Self titled was a surprise release with no singles beforehand. She's just not a singles artist anymore

(and I'm pretty sure she's said before that she prefers her albums are seen as a body of work rather than promoting singles left and right)

Bad Romance had a bigger “cultural” impact than Poler Face. Without Bad Romance, there would be no “Mother Monster”, no “Little Monsters” and no “Paws Up”.

I think so. I can't remember the last time a pop rock song went #1. And it's been over a year since a woman over 30 went #1. Everything screams iconic and memorable.

It's not just another #1 for a pop star. It's Gaga, she is not the kind of girl that gets #1s.

Even more impressive if you can do it without payola, radio deals, or streaming playlist deals while others are using that.

I live outside the space time continuum.

it usually doesn't matter too much, but in this case, it's gaga, she's been a polarizing figure for so long, ever since she released BTW (single), that's why she's not been able to get #1's for such a long time, but now that Shallow hit #1, it means that the general public are here for her again, and are finally warming up to her after 10 years

Yes, I think Gaga is way more interested in her Oscar than on this number 1. It's cute, but it will fade while her Oscar will be by her side on cold and lonely nights

It doesn't actually "matter", but it's still nice to have!

It's especially nice to see it happen to Shallow, to shut up the people who say Gaga needs to create radio-friendly music! (Although i'm sure they'll find a new reason to say it)

That being said, to me it felt like Million Reasons hitting #4 after the Super Bowl was a more important moment than Shallow hitting #1.  Shallow was already a massive worldwide hit, and hitting #1 in the US was just the icing on the cake.  Million Reasons on the other hand, didn't even get the modest success it had until that point.

It's something nice to have, and Gaga loves when her songs are recognized & loved, but she isn't in this for them. So Ying Yang.
