Even though the lyrics are more vague compared to her previous work, they have more meaning. Her past lyrics, even though they were more to the point, they were devoid of any deep meaning. With Joanne she's letting us think more deeply and making us think what could she mean by this lyric. Because that's what you're supposed to do with art. It's not supposed to be spoon fed to you. It goes Perfect Illusion - This song is about a break up where you thought you had love, had your whole life planned out with him and then it got shattered. When she looks back on it she realises it was a perfect illusion. Million Reasons - This song is about the pain she went through with the break up. She needed one good reason to stay in the relationship which was love. All she wanted was LOVE. John Wayne - This is about the next stage. She's ready to get over him with a rebound and find a wild man. So bearing this in mind and going back to what Gaga says Perfect Illusion is about which is social media and fans turning her back on her. Seriously? We weren't there in the studio. The conversation could have gone like this for example... Gaga: I really want to write a song about my break up and put my rage in to it. Mark: That sounds cool. What were you thinking? Gaga: I'm not sure something about how perfect the relationship was and I'm still trying to process why it ended. Then they could have brainstormed and perhaps Kevin piped up with "I've got a track I've been working on that might fit the vibe you're looking for". So he played it, they liked it and built up on it. Perhaps she liked the title and had a lightbulb moment. Who knows? We've seen the lyrics on the type writer and Mark Ronson raved about her coming up with them and writing them. And as for the line "it wasn't love, it wasn't love". Honestly as someone who went through the exact thing when the song came out I can't imagine more fitting lyrics. The song is about the rage and the lyrics are perfect. I think you need to live life more because the whole Joanne album will age with you as you grow because you need to listen to these songs with empathy and understanding and I feel if you haven't got experience to compare it to you won't understand.
