StrawberryBlond 14,267
Haha you really don't like Rihanna, I think the song is alive because is one of her best in a while and she is a good seller in the UK, the public never seems tired of her Certainly Rihanna the person. Her music is ok. But I don't think it deserves as much success as it gets and her music has got steadily worse over the last few years. But I don't think the song's doing well because it's good (which it is, for the record), but because it's Rihanna. She sells on name recognition, not quality. Her name recognition is so strong that she can get away with little to no promotion. In comparison to other artists who work themselves to death promoting to get a #1, like Gaga, they don't always get rewarded with the honour. The public rewards Rihanna for being lazy. They make the albums that she played no part in making be really successful and they make the singles that she doesn't promote chart really well. Whenever she genuinely does try to work hard (Rated R), she gets punished by the public shunning her. The whole thing pisses me off like you wouldn't believe. I want Rihanna and Def Jam to get the message that if Rihanna doesn't promote, she won't get #1's. We've finally got to a point with Rihanna where she's only getting one #1 per album (it used to be like that anyway, with the exception of GGGB and Loud) and I'd like it to stay that way. The public may not tire of her, but they can forget about her. The UK didn't buy into Rated R very well. It only went to #9 here and has sold little over 600,000 copies to date. It got two top ten hits and no #1's. And this just so happened to be the album that she took two and a half years to release, her longest gap ever. Hardly a coincidence. I think that's why she started making albums every year after that - Def Jam were worried that everyone, even her biggest markets like the UK, might forget about her if she didn't. The later more than the former - her name is selling the song. A little known or not currently fashionable singer would never get a hit from it. You got it in one. I expected that her fanbase would be really put out by the fact that she's just releasing low key ballads and that there's only one dance track on her new album, but on the contrary, they seem to be buying into it. It just shows how much Rihanna's brainwashed the public into thinking everything she does is gold, regardless of their music taste. Until now, Rihanna ballads never went to the top in the UK. Take A Bow was her only ballad to ever go to #1 in the UK (and that's just because it was the lead single on the re-release of an already successful album), and Diamonds was her first ballad to achieve the top spot since then. The fact that her ballads are doing well now is because she's a much bigger star, so she can convince people to buy her music much easier.
Jase 13,065
58. Clarity (feat. Foxes) - Zedd **** yes. Climbing fast. It deserves to smash. As for Rihanna, just lol. The video isn't even out yet, so it's gonna be dominating for a while yet. She won't perform it at the Brits because she already performed it on the X-Factor. Pour It Up is her next single, so she'll more than likely perform that, which is when we'll have two Rihanna songs dominating the top 10 :smh:
StrawberryBlond 14,267
Oh, yeah, that's another point: there's still no video out, and yet it does this well. I'd completely forgotten about the BRITS, but it seems that Rihanna won't be performing this year - I looked at the full list of performers. I'm hoping this is a sign that she won't win Best International Female for the third year in a row (she only had one big hit with TTT in the UK, so she definitely didn't deserve it last year anyway). I'm hoping and praying the committee will see sense and give it to Lana.

StrawberryBlond 14,267
Just goes to show how the public's downloading habits can vastly change from one day to the next. Stay going from #3 to #6 just like that. It'll be interesting to see how Beyonce's new single will perform next week. It'll depend on if it's a dance tune or urban and if it's uptempo or a ballad. Beyonce lost a lot of UK loyalty with 4 and the UK has always been one of her biggest markets. But the fact that she was making urban music when the UK's in love with dance might have had something to do with it in addition to very little UK promotion and no world tour. craig 680
The legendary Petula Clark is putting out her first new album in ages this month. She has a a hauntingly beautiful ballad with better lyrics than Stay (and Rihanna invites the comparison with her Vevo add on Petula's video, lol): Cut Copy Me: https://www.youtube....h?v=9iM48qNM8xI

Ellie Sioux 8
so great to see Thrift Shop at #1 the song is so fun and different to anything in the charts atm and Macklemore is a ****ing awesome guy. I really think rap music is making a comeback in the UK, with big talents like Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky getting more and more attention and 'fun' rappers like Dizzee Rascal and Macklemore attracting more pop-orientated audiences. plus it seems to be the cool "in" thing now for people to claim to listen to rap music and act like they're the biggest hip-hop-loving gangsta in the world lmfao. kinda pisses me off considering everybody used to take the piss out of me for listening to rap and being a "wigga" and now those same people are doing it to look cool UGH but anyways! that's my prediction :P 'Stay' needs to die out though. I really hope we get out of this emotional ballad obsession soon, it's all becoming so bland and boring.

craig 680
Chart Highlights http://www.officialc...m/albums-chart/ Thrift Shop rises 22 spot to #2 The rest of the top 10 is pretty static Ellie Goulding's album rises 3 spot to #10. After a less than amazing start given sales of her debut, the 2nd album has legs. Explosions is #21. Bruno Mars album and lead single are out of top 10. After a debut era where he did better in UK than US, things seem to have reversed.
StrawberryBlond 14,267
On the subject of Bruno, I'm simultaneously surprised and not surprised of his performance lately. Throughout his debut success, I maintained that he was just a one album wonder, as far as success goes. The UK can be very fickle and it looks like they're moving on already. For his album to go down to #10 so fast was a bit of a shock. Locked Out Of Heaven turned out to have moderate success in the end, much to my chagrin, but it didn't go to #1 in the UK, where he's had the most support. And his album charted terribly worldwide. It only went to #1 in 3 countries and couldn't even chart within the top ten in most. If this were Gaga, people would be saying that her career's over. When I Was Your Man is the second single and was released in early January, but its charted very low worldwide, hasn't charted in the UK and still has no music video. It's going to be interesting to see where this will lead.
