Haroon 49,685
Definitely not If anything it's the opposite, like I'm more likely to like something she comes out with because I've loved so many of the songs and albums she's done already and I've liked her for ages and I don't see that changing anytime soon either
ElectricAlley 1,737
She works really hard, and she is such a sweet girl. She supported perfect illusion, and gaga's halftime show. She didn't have to do that, she chose to. I thought that was really sweet. You don't have to like the song, but I think we all owe it to her to be kind. I personally think Katy has evolved in her music. OFTB is different than TD and TD to me is different than Prism. I don't know what ya'll are talking about honestly. Yes, that's why I started this topic. It's obvious to me that these people didn't even listen to the song and paid attention to what she's trying to say. And they blame her for being generic while this is the boldest thing she's done in her career lol. I will say I've never been a Katy fan and I do get what they're saying about her having the same aesthetic for a while now but I don't see that at all with this new song and video. ItsTommyBitch 12,640
Not personally. I love Teenage Dream and OOTB, and some of Prism is pretty good (some of its awful though; e.g. Roar) I was actually really excited for this era, but so far im let down by CTTR if thats the lead single 私自身もこの世の中も誰もかれもが, どんなに華やかな人生でも, どんなに悲惨な人生でも, いつかは変貌し, 破壊され、消滅してしまう. すべてがもともとこの世に存在しない一瞬の幻想なのだから

And I'm really surprised that a Lady Gaga fan is dismissing symbolism, for God's sake Anyone who has a brain and is involved in today's issue can easily figure out what the song and video are about. Now, I don't remember listening to anything disco-like in Teenage Dream so it's not the same sound. And I surely don't remember listening to any social criticism in any of her songs so they're also not the same. I'm tying to understand where you're coming from but it's been hard. No it doesn't, because as you said, it uses symbolism. She doesn't go straight to the point, because she uses symbolism. I understood what she's trying to say through the lyric video (well, i have my interpretation, i obviously don't know if it's 100% what she was trying to say), but she doesn't address the issue directly. About the sound/production, this might be personal, just me, but i keep hearing the same thing with different beats. Very care free, radio friendly and clean. I mean, Max Martin produced all TD, Prism, Rise and now CTTD. It's the same guy with the same samples and techniques over and over. About social criticism, she made some kind of it with Firework, Unconditionally and By The Grace of God. In those cases, she addressed the issue much more clearly than now. chromadica 636
I used to but I've grown up. I've always loved her cutesy aesthetic (TD era is everything tbh) and I've grown to like her more over time. She's super nice and doesn't deserve half the **** she receives from this fanbase + others.
Anderson123 38,404
I don't hate her but I get turned off by her image and mostly her music, except for a couple of tracks. Same with Meghan Trainor, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, etc. and so many other current popstars that I just prefer not to look at because they get played everywhere and it tires me. This actually happened recently with Bruno Mars (Uptown Funk) and Maroon 5 (Sugar) as well. As for Katy, I will say that sometimes she releases music that I like, like The One That Got Away, ET and even Dark Horse the first couple of months before it got overplayed. I just get super turned off when she does things like Last Friday Night, Birthday, California Gurls, Roar and all of that cheesy music she releases. Duella Dvil 10,514
Love her as a human. But as a musician. She doesn't release music I like very often. www.instagram.com/theduella666

I have my own opinion about katy, with it's high and lows, and answering the question to the OP, i clearly wrote my reasons, and praised her for her songwriting skills in ballads, her strong point imo. She uses very little symbolism. The songs starts already with the message loud and clear: "Are we crazy, living our lives through a lens, trapped in our white picket fence". Already she's talking about social medial and excluding everything that's not perfect from our lives. Then she says "So comfortable, we live in a bubble, we cannot see the trouble". Straight to the point, we know that's not the best way to handle things but we do it anyway. Then on the pre-chorus she prepares us for what the chorus is about to say "Put your rose-colored glasses on and party on", meaning, pretend like nothing's wrong and dance to the beat. The song is very straight forward. And I'm sorry but Firework just talked about believing in yourself even though others put you down. There is literally no social criticism there. She doesn't call anyone out.

EdgeofTeeth 1,934
No, I really enjoy bopping to a lot of her music. I just think the GP gives her way too much credit (which they do).

She doesn't ask for change. It's a social issue, but it's not social criticism. so what's the point of making a song about empowering bullied kids, if you're not asking for change? Why those kids need to be empowered, in first place? The objective is always making a change (or try to do it). Just by pointing out a social issue, you are criticising it, for better or for worst; in Firework's case is bullying. And, analyzing her work as a whole, (just like we did with CTTR lyric video), Firework's video calls out the oppressed ones, the bullied ones, for change, to stand by themselves without caring about what others say.
