You must be fun at parties

I'm a blast! Thing is though, this isn't a party. This is an online thread. Someone accused me of mocking an artist, I explained why what I said isn't a mockery and backed it up with facts.

Nice try, but I don't bring my partying life here, and don't bring what's on here into parties. :)

Mock? Please. I'm just after reading an article which wondered why it was a commercial failure. Easy, she released 7 singles of a 12 track record and released the album early in Japan after it leaked online. It made waaaaay less than ARTPOP. So no, it's hardly a perfect album.

The writer of the article is a huge fan of Carly, so also wondered why a 30 year old woman is still dancing/acting/singing/behaving in music videos like a teenager to teenagery music. Also easy. Some of the best songwriters and producers worked on that album, people who have written for Adele, The Weeknd etc. Some people may applaude and say yaaaaay Carly. Me? Not so much. It's not a mockery to call it bubblegum pop when it is exactly that; deliberately and methodically so. The music, the videos, the lyrics, it's all designed to appeal to young millennials, you know, the record parents are sick of having to play for their kids in the car?

I don't deny it was a critical success. It was as critically acclaimed as 1989, which coincidentally, happens to be also written and designed for kids and teenagers.

I don't deny that it was successful. Just don't be afraid to ask yourself why.

I enjoy the music, I could care less about sales. Pop is meant to be generic and catchy

I don't care one damn about sales either, I'm just pointing out that you're wrong by saying that it's a perfect album.

Pop is meant to be generic and catchy? Ever hear the song 'Don't Sing' by Data? It's a great catchy pop song. Nothing generic about it. Pop music derived from rock and roll, and 'Don't Sing' is a pop song which declares war on the regurgitated soulless generic formula of contemporary pop music. It is an ode to rock and roll, appreciates where its genre comes from. Rock and roll is rebellion, is soul, is heart, is mind. Empty, and, as you put it, "generic and catchy" songs aren't enough to constitute pop music. It's an insult to pop music. The generally accepted societal definition of pop music is music which draws on jazz, folk, classical, rock and the fine arts. Nothing generic about it.

Pop music isn't "meant" to be anything. The money-grabbing corporations are trying to trick you into thinking that not only is it meant to be something, but whatever that something is, they have it. It's utter nonsense and it isn't so you can enjoy the music, it's to that they can make money.

I have to say I can bop along to a lot of the soulless trash out there, but it makes my heart sink when I do to remember the impure intention behind it. Am I going to go all out Illuminati and say that Rihanna and Carly are 'puppets'? No. I think that's a tad melodramatic. But they are certainly the vehicles; fresh, young faces targeted to young mass-audiences. It's a constant system and a constant formula.

I've never been a fan of hers, and I was just used to read a lot of people praising and stanning for the album, until I finally appreciated and got an emotional connection to it. It's a special pop album. I just don't understand why some still need to milk negativity on all things. Just ****ing enjoy the music. And now, I'm excited for this too.

Releasing early in Japan was an enormous mistake. :( She should've released the album everywhere at the same date.

You over analyze too much.

Who would of thought she wouldnt end up a one hit wonder:giveup:

She isn't. LOL.

She has Call Me Maybe, so that's one. She's featured in Good Time, so that's two. And, I Really Like You went to #39 in the Hot 100 so that qualifies as a hit, a three.
