Some people like to hear the different parts that make up songs. I myself am the 3rd type. I love hearing all the things you can't hear in the actual track, especially vocal wise. When you hear a song with more than one instrument, you are hearing the finished "meal", as you were meant to hear it. When you hear a stem, you are hearing one instrument isolated from the rest of a song, for example, just the drum track. Other stems could be the guitar track, a high synth track, a low synth track, or a bass track. I think (I could be wrong) the naked (dry) acapella itself is considered a kind of stem. When you put all of those stems together you get a finished song, when they are placed in the proper order and timing. Stems are essentially the individual roots of a song's finished tree.
