I mean the unofficial merch people literally have no legal right to use her name or image and it’s all actually illegal and she could easily sue them to stop. So if she just gets an idea from their illicit activities I would hardly call that the more egregious of the activities. She has the right to sell her own image and name. They do not.

Okay and the unofficial merch people stole her name and likeness for their own profit? I don’t see a problem here. It’s not even like that design would take more than 15 minutes to make in Canva

I was thinking the same tbh. Even if she did get the idea from them, those ppl literally used her name first to make money royalty free so I think at worst we call it even tbh

 

I get its popular to hate on both Katy Perry and the rich in general (for valid reasons)... but in this particular case, I dont think the merch sellers have much to stand on to complain. They wouldnt have made any money from unofficial merch without using her name in the first place

Exactly. People hate Katy so much they want to side with people openly ripping her off. It’s a strange mob hate train mentality.

It’s such a widespread practice artists never make a move to stop them, even though it probably does cannibalize some of their own official merch sales. I do think it’s ludicrous that these bootleggers would try to take the indignant high ground in this situation.
