Because of the hybrid dress?? I bet these people also think that Chinese-Japanese cuisine is racist.
Fusion cuisine is racist.

Ugh

Funny, the PC people who complain that Katy combined elements of Japanese and Chinese traditional dress, often lump Asians and Hispanics with Blacks as if all non-whites were similarly victims of racism and had similar experiences and interests vs "whitey."

Yet Asians often lose out because of race based university admissions quotas designed to help blacks, and when these were eliminated in some states the percentage of Asians went way up.

None of that really has anything to do with what I said. I didn't even mention the "race card" or anything to do with shutting up to keep the order.

My point is simple: Races are not monolithic entities, and so they can't be collectively responsible or culpable for individual's attitudes or behaviors. That's it. That attitude is harmful to everyone, white or not- my objection to it has nothing to do with prioritizing white people.

Not to generalize too far, but this is the exact same problem I always encounter trying to have fruitful discussions with internet "social justice" advocates. Parroting rhetoric, memes, quotes, or ideology is easy but actually thinking through these issues, for example actually reading and understanding my simple point against racism, seems beyond your grasp.

-I mentioned the race card b/c someone in an earlier post believed people were quick to draw it. I should've quoted them tbh

-And I thought you were against generalizing groups and making them monoliths (jk)

-MLK's quote wasn't a retort to you but rather a summation of what I feel when discussing this kind of thing. Craig's statements on "real racism" also inspired that.

-And yes, I read and understood your simple point. I just don't agree with it lol. Understanding =/= agreement.

I don't really see how you can think through that and still disagree. So what, you think all white people actually do act as a monolithic, collective group? Me, Katy Perry, and the bullies who tormented that person you quoted earlier actually are all the same person, or might as well be, because we're all white? Are you really going to argue such an absurdity, and even argue that's not a racist view?

Y'know the people in this thread shouldn't be lumped together anymore than your quote earlier was doing that with racial groups.

I hate to break it to you, but people disagree. On a lot of things. AKA this.

Whites don't act as a group, imo, but that doesn't stop people from believing me and all Mexicans are pouring into a country trying to take back the Mexican land given to the U.S. in 1848 (yes, I was actually accused of this, which was followed by a hearty laugh on my part). I think a group like White people benefit as a whole. You are the gold standard. Look anywhere you go: magazines, sitcoms, movie leads, parliaments/Congress, etc. It's why Julie Chen admitted to having work done on her eyes for more employment opportunities; it's clear what reigns supreme.

By dictionary definition alone, the idea of racism against against any group based on color holds water. Except I would hardly call the dictionary definition of something complex like race and its issues the end all be all. It's like me claiming I know ALL there is to know about a rabbit just by reading the two-sentence definition provided by the dictionary.

Tell me, would you trust a surgeon who knows all his/her body parts from dictionary definitions alone? Of course not! Intricate procedures like that require dissection (pun intended) and study of the nitty-gritty of it all, which isn't provided in a small block of dictionary info.

The issue between us is that the quote you posted made generalizations and conflations based on race which are not accurate and are, by my definition, racist and pretty damn offensive. What does any of the stuff you're now posting have to do with that? Especially two wholly irrelevant paragraphs about dictionary definitions. My definition came from me, not a dictionary.

People disagree all the time, sure. But your disagreement here is absurd because objectively I am not Katy Perry and neither she nor I are all other white people. You get around admitting the blatant absurdity by continually changing the subject.

I was under the impression that Katy's performance was the issue, but ok.

Say, you said "by my definition." Do tell, why do you get to have your own definition of racism? Doesn't that mean i can have one as well? I mean, you ARE all about equality, aren't you?

If so, then what I think has the same right to exist like yours.

I say this bc you were shocked that i disagreed with you. Well, this is why, bc of my own definition for racism. Surely i get to have one if you can?

Words do not have objective definitions, but in order to be useful as communication tools we have to agree on or establish common definitions, if only temporarily. Which is why earlier when I said your quote was racist I defined what I meant by that- it doesn't really matter if that matches your personal definition of the word as long as you understand what I was trying to communicate.

I don't care how you define any word, that's not the real issue here. The issue is you spreading wrong, inaccurate, hateful and potentially harmful bull**** in the name of the cause against racism. That's like trying to stop a fire by burning it.

I'm only shocked at your own apparent lack of introspection and standards of intellectual honesty in this matter.

I'm sorry you feel that way. And that almost sounds like a fire break that firefighters use but i digress. It is nearly 2 am here and my minority self has to go to sleep so i can wake up and greet a world that would never ever judge me on my brown skin alone. In any case, i doubt you considered this fruitful but to quote Lisa Simpson (or any other Simpson for that matter): "meh." That's alright.

While I was watching it, I figured there'd be at least a few people calling it racist. I don't believe it's racist because she didn't do it to insult, mock, or hurt a certain race. Granted, it was more culturally ignorant than anything. It kinda just made me feel as though she didn't really pay close enough attention to the cultural significance of any of the elements in her performance and it, ultimately, ended up being a bit...sour, I guess? It didn't feel respectful. I'm not saying she was disrespectful, just that it could have been handled a lot better and the cultural references could have actually been used significantly.

My Little Phoney

 give her a break

There's enough actual racism in the world to go after, without having to harass good-hearted, liberal anti-racist artists like Gaga and Katy over this bull**** concept of cultural appropriation. Get your damn priorities straight.

This so much...
