Ozzy8923 9
09. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - The Heist - 540,000 Not much better than Fun and Gotye last year. Being unsigned may be hurting him here. Yep. Physical albums still sell more than digital ones, and without a label, it's hard to get hard copies of your album out to retail stores. So they basically have traded singles success in favor of album's success by not signing. A bad move.

Tommymonster44 0
Yep. Physical albums still sell more than digital ones, and without a label, it's hard to get hard copies of your album out to retail stores. So they basically have traded singles success in favor of album's success by not signing. A bad move. Is it, though? If people are just buying your album because it's easy and accessible in retail stores, I don't think them not buying your album is going to hurt your career. These are the types of people that probably won't be buying your music 10 years from now anyways. The biggest cons to me are: 1) harder to promote 2) good labels have good connections to others within the industry.

craig 680
It's clear Macklemore has great crossover appeal for white pop fans who like as singles as a novelty. However, I have no idea whether the hardcore hip-hip heads who buy Lil Wayne, Drake, and Kanye are are into him enough for an album purchase.
