PSYCHOSHTICK

My review on the first listen.

Spoiler

I FEEL SO FREE
Love it. Fantastic opener.
8

GOOD FOR THE SOUL
Sounds more like Confessions 1 than I expected after hearing the teaser. Definitely a grower.
7

ONE STEP AWAY
Really chill. It just takes a long time before anything new happens.
7

BRING YOUR LOVE
Children's music.
5

DANCETERIA
****ing amazing. ****ing gay. I need to hear this in a gay bar. This should've been the lead single.
8

READ MY LIPS
No. I get that it's supposed to be some kind of summer hit, but it doesn't fit the album, and that Bad Bunny wannabe needs to go home.
5

EVERYTHING
Uh... Is this supposed to be a nod to Impressive Instant? It has something going for it, but I really have to be in the mood because it's just... a lot.
I think the build-up will be incredible live.
6

LOVE SENSATION
The summer hit that never happened. It's nice, I'll throw it on once in a while, but it sounds too much like Bring Your Love to me.
6

LOVE WITHOUT WORDS
Yeah, I **** with this. The intro is sick! The lyrics are really ****ing dumb, though. Where are the deep lyrics from Confessions 1?
7

BIZARRE
OMG, apparently this is about Sean Penn! Musically, we finally get those strings that were all over Confessions 1 again. The chorus is a bit repetitive, though.
7

SCHOOL
**** yeah! Sexy, danceable, dark... ****kkkk. Love the little nods to I'd Rather Be Your Lover and the Blond Ambition era.
8

FRAGILE
Does every song really have to start with a spoken-word intro? Alright...
The music is kind of drum 'n' bass-ish, which I find a little distracting, especially since it's such a beautiful song about her brother.
Heyyyy, finally the Confessions vocoder robot voice is back! :D
OMG, it builds up so well at the end when the strings come in.
7

MY SINS ARE MY SAVIOR
HOLY **** THIS IS INSANE. THIS SAMPLES A SONG I'VE BEEN OBSESSED WITH FOR YEARS THAT LITERALLY NOBODY KNOWS, AND IT'S ONE OF MY MOST-PLAYED SONGS. OMMMMGGGGGG!!!!!! WHAT ARE THE ODDS?!?!?! I LISTEN TO IT ALMOST EVERY DAY!!
It's Army of Lovers by Army of Lovers, a pretty obscure track!!!
OMG, the beat is SO Erotica! The French lyrics!! This is MY FAVORITE!!!
Stromae actually adds something here! He's not doing some annoying rap verse or anything.
9, maybe even 10

BETRAYAL
Ooooh, starts off really sexy. Very Erotica.
LOVE the saxophone.
"You'll never take my mother's place." Is that about her stepmother?
Wow, this is so sultry and sexy. It has to be raining and dark outside when you listen to this.
9

THE TEST
The lyrics are obviously about Lola.
The music is cute, but not something I'd play very often.
6

LES GIRL
Huh... Okay... I honestly have no idea what to think about this... Is Madonna trying to be The Marías?
I kind of like it, but it also feels really strange.
It's nice to end the album on a quieter note, but it's just... weird.
Rating: No idea yet. I need to listen to it a few more times.

First listen review:
Album Overall - 8/10

I'm finally joining the "Confessions 2" is the wrong name gang. Because it does a diservice to the album, the album is so much more than a Confessions sequel. There's so many moments that nod to her best albums (Erotica/RoL/Music) and not just Confessions while also taking some weaker albums (MDNA & MX) and elevating them.
I actually hope the "Brat Remix album" rumour for this proves to be true, because there's some tracks here that would sound amazing given a full dance remix treatment.

Spoiler

I Feel So Free - 8/10 It's a brilliant opener, been a defender of it since day one, but it really comes into its own with the full album to contextualise it.
Good for the Soul - 9/10 Feels like a lovechild of ROL + Music, would have been a massive dance hit in the 00s.
One Step Away - 6.5.10 It's good, but feels like a bit of a come down after the first two tracks.
BYL - 6/10 Ngl, one of the weakest songs on here. With the full album available now, kind of shocking it was "lead" single.
Danceteria - 10/10 Should have been the lead, should have been the introduction to the era. This should be a massive hit but I have no faith in the music industry. The breakdown at the end is so good.
Read My Lips - 7/10 very 00s summer eurodance hit. Reminisent of an Ace of Base track. The best latin/reggaeton influenced track she's done. The feature feels out of place onthe album though.
Everything - 8/10 MDNA wishes it has instrumentals like this
Love Sensation - 8/10 I hope the Kylie remix rumour is true. Feels like BYL but signifcantly better.
Love Without Words - 9/10 Ngl, Love Without Words would have been a great title for this album thematically. I love this instrumental.
Bizarre - 10/10 I hope to **** this takes off, her team need to push it hard. Garrix has done an amazing job here. This is another "MDNA if it slapped" moment. This should be the Believe/Padam Padam moment for the album.
School - 10/10 Hello Erotica 2.0
Fragile - 10/10 Reminds me of You're Not Alone by Olive. Such a beautiful song. Melancholic dance music is severly underrated.
My Sins Are My Savior - 8/10 very 90s and very Erotica, feels out of place with its spot in the tracklist though think it should be earlier in the album with I Feel So Good & Good for the Soul. But it builds into Betrayal brilliantly.
Betrayal - 10/10 feels like an elevated MX track. Love the jazz elements in the instrumental. The darkest the album gets, kind of wish we had more of it.
The Test - 9/10 An unexpected sequel to Little Star, really enjoyable as part of the closing moments of the album.
L.E.S. Girl - 10/10 What is a night out without the 4am afters watching the sunrise. This song shouldn't work considering the album it comes after, but its the perfect palette cleanser.

Songs I want to hear on a Confession 2 tour:
I Feel So Free, Good For The Soul, Danceteria, Love Sensation, Love Without Words, Bizarre, Fragile, Betrayal, L.E.S Girl.
Everything & School are prime tour interlude contenders.

The gays know how to party

Y'all I've been blasting this all morning and I am drunk af and danced so much my legs got f-up and I can't walk but it was worth it.

I was a bit sceptical at first if this is going to be good, as I wasn't a big fan of the Bring Your Love and Love Sensation, but hearing those in the context of this album, I LOVE. I feel like this is easily her best work, since, well, Confessions. It's nothing like the first Confessions, but I get why she decided to call this part 2 after listening to the lyrics. Danceteria? Wig flew. School? I LOVE the production of it, it's kinda intense, messed up and I love it. Def the highlight of the album for me. Read My Lips has been my most played song so far, I could write a whole essay about it, but let's just say, I love it. Also, the production on Betrayal is very interesting, I love how it is mixing two different styles together, and it works. Love Without Words, love. Fragile was beautiful, loved the lyrics, I could relate to it, not as Madonna but a brother who she is singing to, you know. But that's a story for another topic lmao.

BUT, I do have to say, The Test and L.E.S Girls both kinda ruins the vibes, I appreciate the lyrics and I think I get the vision, but I don't think those are good songs nor a good album closer imo.

But overall, it's a great album, I cried, I danced, I broke my legs so 10/10 lmao. Gotta listen to it a few more times to give the lyrics a better listen. It's a fun album, esp the production is top tier but that was expected from Stuart.

---

EDIT// I actually am surprised she chose Bring Your Love as lead, because this album is full of stronger songs, I wonder if it was because of Sabrina?

Agreed they really ****ed up the single releases. Shame she had Sabrina on BYL cause I prefer the solo haha

I’m grateful to have heard it early, but I will never understand why the person that ripped it ripped it at 83kbps :icant:

It’s so interesting because the album as a whole is absolutely brilliant, even though there’s no clear « blockbuster single » ala Hung Up (at the exception of Danceteria, maybe). Even the songs that seemed weaker so far, like Love Sensation or Read My Lips, feel really amazing in the overall flow.

In that respect, I feel it’s sort of closer to albums like Erotica or Bedtime Stories in the sense that the whole thing works better than its separated elements.

To sum things up: hands down her best album since the OG Confessions. I did enjoy her albums from the last 20 years, but it feels like she found herself again.
