Alejandro Meaning

I am aware the song overall is about the "Fear Of Men Monster" and Gaga saying goodbye to her past lovers but there is one part that always tripped me up and confused me a bit.

"She's got both hands, in her pocket and she won't look at you, won't look at you

She hides true love, en su bolsillo, She's got a halo around her finger, around you"

I can get from the rest of the lyrics that she is unsure if she can be with Alejandro because of her previous messy/toxic relationships (Fernando, Roberto) and that if they are together he will have to deal with her baggage (this is in the 2nd verse especially) but that part of the first verse is a bit confusing. I don't think Gaga is the type to cheat/hide things like that in a relationship and it is confusing in the context of the rest of the song. Thoughts?:oprah:

That’s an interesting question … I love those particular lyrics for some reason, but hadn’t really considered their significance in context (I think just the poetic imagery always felt striking … but/and/also, to your point, a bit mysterious or with shades of opaque) … so this is just a bit of a stream of consciousness take on the first rewind …

Both hands in her pocket reads like hiding her true love in her pocket (both hands in her pocket, she hides her true love en su bosillo) … but then the “she won’t look at you,” paralleling / echoing the “halo” she’s got around her finger (and you) … the halo could be some sense of sacred marriage, it’s not a material wedding ring, the “halo” analogy signifies something deeper, more cosmic (divine?), something that functions (within a capacity) in diametric opposition to “legal” marriage, and yet the “halo” around her finger and “you” reads like something divinely orchestrated or fated by the stars … at the same time, even though it’s hidden, maybe that plays to her intrinsic knowing that their bond is something sacred and eternal that doesn’t need public display … at the same time … the halo could also reflect a “halo” she‘s projecting on her idealized version of him … that glow of perfection projected on to lovers (that she won’t “look” at you, but and because that halo … maybe it blinds her from his flaws, and/or maybe the halo is like, flaws and all, it doesn’t matter because we’re yoked by these halos for eternity) … but, so, maybe there‘s a protection … she‘s got the halo around them both

That was rambling, but maybe something relevant emerged …

Spoiler

Also, even if that isn’t how it was written at the outset, there were always strong under/overtones of the McQueen significance (outside of romantic partnership, she and Alexander McQueen felt like a once-in-a-lifetime creative symbiosis … Fernando and Roberto felt like allusions to other creative partners in a way … but, the BRITs performance anchored the analogy within a capacity)

I’ve always thought the theory of Alejandro, Fernando, and Roberto being the traditional understanding of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit interesting (foreshadowing to BJAF’s “old symbolism was left behind” and the equality based pop evangelism of BTW more broadly). It was a theory that I saw on Vigilant Citizen back in the day, but I think the idea of Gaga writing a song about releasing religious dogma and shame that is also ostensibly about leaving a toxic relationship fits within how she’s always situated the song in MVs and live performances (removing religious dogma and bathing herself in the unmediated blood of Christ in the Monster Ball show, the re-appropriation of religious iconography in the music video).

I think the meaning of the song has taken on new meanings as time went on... it seems to be one for the gays now and I don't know if it was always intended that way.

One fun fact I know about the song is that all the names in the song are producers she once worked with

Well that's interesting but I'm talking specifically about the lyrics in that first verse within the context of the rest of the song, not outside theories.
