gay men should probably get the opportunity to act in media as gay roles.

This just serves to entrench the abusive system Hollywood runs on.

It benefits them if we insist gay roles only go to out gay actors, because that allows them to label roles by sexuality and continue blocking out gay actors from playing bigger roles (like action movie heroes etc).

We need to stop begging for scraps that entrench discrimination and start demanding actual equality (let Hugh Jackman come out).

Agreed, however, one could argue that plenty of gay actors have already been in straight roles - they just haven’t been out. Which again just sort of emphasizes my thought that let the gays have the few roles that are actually written for them. I also think there’s no surprise that the clearly straight actor is the one that has gotten the most attention, while Connor who actually may be a member of the community has been interviewed and featured far less.

In the long run, I agree that actors should be able to play any role. However, I still stand by that currently the representation is so small that I’d prefer if these major opportunities went to actual members of the community. Especially when the characters sexuality is truly so focal.

I think the issue is that creating a specific funnel for gay actors by locking gay roles will just enable Hollywood to further enforce the closet on actors.
Gay roles are paid less, in more at risk productions (so long term viability isn't guaranteed - look at Boots), and generally are smaller roles.

I don't think locking these roles off will help gay actors. It will just force more into the closet in order to have a viable career.
