Find him to be arrogant and elitist. Not down to earth, cannot relate to most americans. Not a fan and cant see anything grass roots coming from his campaign. Because of all of those things, I dont think that AOC would automatically sign on but... we'll see. Gavin has been great at keeping trump on his toes. And he can make conservatives cry in debates. I'll support him if that is the direction we must go to get a liberal in office... and if AOC could ever become vice president, she may be on the path to President one day which is something I hope to see. 4

Ziggy 14,091
and he would have last time if kamala hadn't been the nominee but realistically he has no shot. Middle of the country doesnt want a california d*ckwad plus the GOP would salivate at the chance to put his ex front row at a debate or air dirty laundry to be messy.

I was literally just thinking this earlier today: 2024 was the perfect window for most of the moderate candidates (Newsom, Whitmer, Beshear, Shapiro etc) because all they would’ve had to do was run against the unpopularity of the Biden admin (something Harris didn’t and in some ways couldn’t do effectively) and the insanity of the Trump 2.0 agenda and they probably could’ve eked out a modest victory. However, after the social, political, and economic chaos and destruction we’ve *already* seen under Trump (much less what it will likely be in 2028), half-measures simply won’t cut it and I think much of the base (and hopefully much of the public) will be primed for more radical change. I think he has a very good shot if his redistricting passes in California and if it’s enough to tip the scales in the house at midterms.

I still think a progressive on the top of the ticket will be poison just 'cause the US is more scared of the word socialism than they are of actual nazism But I'd be happy to be proven wrong As if my opinion really matters anyway. The most conservative Dem will win my state's primary and then a Republican will get my state's EC votes. I'm irrelevant lmao Whimsical bitch

I think honestly if a progressive candidate runs more in the lane of economic populism then I think the socialist dogma comes out in the wash; not to mention that they ran against Harris and Biden as if they were socialists, so it proves that they’ll try to slap the label on whoever no matter what, basically rendering the label meaningless. MACATL 2,133
He’s too politician-y, and independents are not a fan of what’s happening in CA cities, and it will be pounded into their heads that thats exactly what he will do to the country. It will be relatively easy to beat him IMO. Dems need a salt-of-the-earth middle-aged white man as the nominee. PornoDanceFight 2,144
Fork found in kitchen I don't find him to be electable. He is an establishment Dem, just like Kamala, and he is following the same Dem-loser playbook as she did: capitulate to far right figures by having them on his podcast; regurgitate anti-trans talking points; cozying up to Big Tech and vetoing A.I. regulations; the man has signed executive orders for CA police to clear out homeless encampments and even posted pictures of himself clearing out homeless encampments. Never mind his alleged misuse of COVID funds and the fact that he is the poster child of, to what half of the country deemed, was "COVID authoritarianism" by enacting (common sense) mask mandates and vaccine policies. He's attractive, looks good on paper, and is one of the most visible and vocal opponents of Trump, even during his first administration. But, as liberal Californian, even I have reservations about voting for him. The Democrats need a stronger political message that isn't "We're not Trump." That didn't work in 2024. That didn't work in 2016*. It is a losing strategy. That alone will not give them election wins, especially if we enter 2028 with more rigged gerrymandered districts and not-as-secure elections. Dems need a viable progressive message that addresses the material needs of the majority of this country. Giving far-right podcasters and leaning into anti-trans rhetoric is not going to give them a win when there is no plan on helping lower class workers afford groceries and healthcare. It’s my guess as to why he didn’t seem overly enthusiastic about Kamala’s nomination. Biden ran on one term presidency and then would pave the way for the next gen and Newsom REALLY wanted it (I imagine some promising convos were had). And then his running again and dropping out torpedo’d that so he’s been trying the last few months to build some national momentum hence the rebrand as like dirtbag liberal on socials

These people probably willing to compromise for a moderate, however it will be another big defeat if someone who come off too strong with left agendas. monstertoronto 11,774
Why do people not think Gavin Newsom is a good idea? He’s been so vocal in opposing Trump. From Canada he seems like one of the more outspoken US politicians, especially with his stand on the GOP redistricting. I get the sense that a lot of Americans don’t like him because he’s from California? Why is that? I don’t understand the objections to him. In America there’s a polarized energy between coastal elitism and regional pride. To many (due in part to himself and the Fox News cycle), Newsom is among the group that represents coastal elitism bc he’s pretty smug. As for why people left might not like him, it’s bc he really has a tendency to get behind some BAD policies like anti homeless ones but then at the same time genuinely good ones but the prevailing feeling is he picks where he leans for vanity reasons not moral principle. For instance, he is very outspoken against Trump but people feel like he’s doing it to make a run for president not just bc it matters a lot to himz Basically he seems slimey and opportunistic to people which is not wholly unfounded. There’s definitely worse picks, for sure. He just has some trust issue baggage but yeah a liberal governor from California is going to have a hard time regardless of who it was Edited October 29, 2025 by Ziggy 1
