The Supreme Leader of Iran is an elected post (indirectly) bestowed by the Assembly of Experts. So he is replaceable. Khamenei is believed to be in illhealth, and has been for some time. And it's believed that the succession has been planned out by the Iranian elite with an anonymous member of the Assembly of Experts saying one had been picked in 2024. The rumour mill is President Raisi was favoured until his death last year, and now the rumour mill suggests either Khamenei's son or his close aide Larijani. Israeli reports are that Mojtaba Khamenei has been picked by Ali Khamenei although the rest of the intelligence world believes Ali Khamenei opposes it, and other sources say that there are 3 nominees. Larijani seems the most likely at the moment as he has a lot of military and intelligence allies - and he's a significant hardliner who's pushed back against a number of Iranian presidents who have promoted reform.
