It's the one area of the planet where they don't already have ease of access to the neccessary natural resources to maintain their superpower status. Exactly! Iran is Russia's gateway to the Middle East and a strategic link to India and the Indian Ocean. Iran is also a regional power in the Middle East due to its position as the leader of the Shia branch of Islam. They have a degree of power and significance based solely on population too (90 million people). The idea that Iran is an insignificant backwater is unfounded and not supported by facts.
