how is she wrong exactly? im sure there must be commercially successful projects that ride the capitalistic machine in one way or another and that you'd still consider art pieces and you would say both commerce and art interject and co-exist.

I think there might be individual pieces for sure, and I do realize that since we do live in a capitalistic world, its inference is inevitable. However, I do believe that capitalism is inherently against the production of art, thus, I believe this statement to be false.

So long ggd, it was nice while it lasted.

see i agree, tho i don't know if i would say it is inherently against the production of art, it surely commodifies it and corrupts it with the intent of more profits, and you can argue that by doing that you'd be killing art, and is true, but if they cant coexist together and "befriend" to find a balance in specific instances, then they will be always opposed to each other and no art piece can exist in a capitalist society, if this is true, there wouldn't even be a reason for her or any real artist to stay in the pop machine and would retire from it.  she's not saying that capitalism uplifts art, or is to the benefit of of art at all, only that they can coexist, i agree that the use of the word "friend" is not the best for it, but that's not what i got from what she said, see she's acknowledges that a disparity and an irreconcilability exist but that can be overcomed.

It's so funny that the very same people criticizing capitalism are probably the same who are expressing their disappointment through their expensive smartphone :bionic:

I can’t believe the level of outrage here.

Only art that could escape the hegemony of the capital is avant-garde art. I am not talking about Charli XCX. Fridge-militant art of Tristan Tzara, let’s say, is my reference. Not a global pop singer who utilizes mass-media for the distribution of their product.

Even Bowie needed the structure that capitalism provides. It is just the fact of being a global brand. There is nothing wrong with that. True manipulation comes when people with half of a million net worth starts talking like a beginner with no support.

Gaga is just being honest here. I almost appreciate her candid approach. Gaga could believe in her art being separated from the mechanics of capitalism but do you think her label would have the same sensibilities? Is Gaga now a champion of the working class?

Don’t be silly and if you want some truly revolutionary art, start digging deep and grab a poetry book or something, instead of getting agitated about the choices and words of an ultra-rich individual. It is like going to the Dean’s Office to say someone mispronounce your pronouns. You are still going to a figure of authority for help. Put your eggs to another basket.

tbh this is the most fair statement I have read on either side.

It's ok to be capitalist...just try to sprinkle in giving things fans actually want along the way like music....If GaGa had released an album in the middle of all these endorsments NO ONE would complain this much but because there is a legit drought of fresh new music from her it is making the ads and off the cuff statements like this sort of sting and feel really odd...

The western culture as a whole is benefiting from it but people like to blame it on the superrich. It's so easy to point fingers at others when it reality we have to change our mindset as a whole. That was actually my point.
