Grindr Pays £26 Millions To Settle UK Lawsuit For Allegedy Sharing Users HIV Status

Grindr will pay £26m to settle a lawsuit brought by thousands of users in the UK who allege that the US dating app shared highly sensitive personal information, including in some cases their HIV status, with advertising companies.

The settlement brings to an end a two-year legal battle, after the UK law firm Austen Hays filed a claim at the high court of England and Wales in April 2024 on behalf of Grindr users alleging violations of UK privacy laws during a period up to early 2020.

The London law firm represented 12,000 people, who will receive an average compensation of £2,167 each, if the £26m is equally distributed.

Grindr said in a US regulatory filing that it had resolved the UK group action related to what it described as “historical data practices before 2020”, when Grindr was owned and controlled by the Chinese gaming company Beijing Kunlun Tech.

The California company said: “The settlement includes no findings or admission of liability. While Grindr disputes the allegations, it recognises and acknowledges the distress and loss of trust expressed by some of its UK users regarding that pre-2020 period.”

As part of the UK settlement, Grindr agreed to pay £13m by the end of this year, and a further £13m by the end of March 2027.

Is users' HIV status not already public?  

Idk, someone can tell me why that should be private but just spontaneous assumption tells me a hookup app should have a place on a user's profile that discloses if they have a disease like that.

It's nobody's business except for you, your doctor, and you partners...which is what that app is for, no?

Most of my HIV patients only tell it to their close friends and partners, I know a lot of people who are positive and put negative on Grindr. The sorophobia is galloping, sis.

HIV status can be made public on the dating app. That wasn't the issue.

The legal case was about the previous owner of Grindr selling *all* user data including HIV status to 3rd party advertisers and other companies.

You can put your HIV status on the app but this is more to do with the fact that they sold the information to outside parties beyond the boundaries of the app where they no longer are given the choice anymore about who has the data.

And pointless now that we have meds that make you undetectable to the point that you aren't contagious

Its not irresponsible if they're on medication which requires regular check ins to ensure that its working (and not causing any negative issues within the body as it can be kidney or liver toxic - I forget which).

With the amount of misinformation that still abounds about HIV within the community, people with HIV still face significant amounts of abuse from others. Alongside having to deal with predatory behaviour from bugchasers. 

People with HIV, who are medicated and undetectable, are far more responsible when it comes to sexual health than virtually any other population on dating apps excluding sex workers who go through the same regular testing just without the medication. 

I had a friend who was a sexual health nurse so I have had it trained into me to get tested every 3 to 6 months depending on how active I am.

I have some friends who don't get regularly tested and some that have never gone for testing. But meanwhile are regularly hooking up with downlow straight guys at saunas or cruising grounds who typically have the lowest rates of testing. That's irresponsible.
