LateToCult 41,861
Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., a vocal advocate of gun control measures who was known for trying to find common ground with Republicans during her three decades in the Senate, has died, according to two sources familiar with the matter. She was 90. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/dianne-feinstein-rcna18010 California’s US senate election just got thrown into a tailspin. Adam Schiff’s and Katie Porter’s campaigns may have just burst into flames if Newsom decides to fill the empty seat with Barbara Lee.

With Barbara Lee coming 3rd in polling and her vote share going in reverse I think any move by Newsom to appoint her would only lead to a voter backlash if Porter or Schiff challenged her in 2024. There could very well be a backlash that sinks Lee’s campaign but some factors that could help are Newsom’s popularity among California Democrats. Could a stamp of approval from Newsom make enough Democrats get behind her? Over 80% approval rating among his party in a state like California means Newsom has some pull. Guess we won’t know until a few days. This is a very awkward political situation. Newsom may even decide to appoint someone who would agree to not seek election. However, that would more than likely put Newsom in hot water with Black voters because the leading candidates are both white, making his original promise worthless. Very interesting times ahead for California.

thefamebitch 834
Very sad but she should have retired months ago when everyone was calling for that. California's Democratic governor will appoint a replacement who will serve out the rest of Feinstein's term. Her term ended next year anyway and she wasn't seeking re-election, so I expect the California Dems know exactly who they want for the post already Her seat on the Judicial Committee won't be filled because the Reps have said they're block it, so basically no new judges for the rest of Biden's term

Very interesting times ahead for California. All very good points - but given the major criticism of Feinstein was her age, it's the same critique directed at Lee. Especially as Lee has gone on record as stating she only wants to serve one term as a transitionary candidate (which is hot garbage imo but besides the point lol). If Newsom is going to stick to his pledge to nominate a Black Woman to fill the seat, I hope picks a candidate that is significantly younger than Lee so they actually have mileage and a future in the seat & senate. Newsome won't appoint a current congress person because those seats aren't filled until the next election. Porter and Schiff will compete for the seat in 2024. We need all the votes we have in the House. Pelosi is the most productive speaker of the house in our lifetimes. You have to understand that you don't get the same promises from Pelosi, Biden, Obama, Clinton - because they focus on what can ACTUALLY be done in the system. There are too many districts that will vote republican - NO MATER WHAT - to deliver so many things progressives put in their platforms. There is literally no map in this reality that could deliver so much of what they promise. But the only way we get things done is by banding together - or as you call it - "being a Pelosi pawn". Katie Porter has been a reliable Democrat and I'd be fine with her, but Adam Schiff is effective also. He literally said 2 weeks ago he’d appoint a replacement if he has to (he now has to) and it’ll be a black woman. Literally every Dem is saying he’s going to appoint a caretaker Dem to finish her term so idk why you’re acting like the seat will be vacant til 2024 Obviously this is a different circumstance than what they talked about - but make him going back on what he publicly stated make sense. And Schiff is a Pelosi pawn because he’s ideologically locked with her and she’s been pushing him as a replacement for Feinstein for years. Pelosi’s daughter literally lived with and shadowed Dianne in her later years. Maybe ask what I meant by that instead of assuming I’m against party unity. Also what actually can get done is what leaders advocate and compromise for, and you’re just gonna get more bang for your buck w more progressives in office. I’m not gonna spend my day typing paragraphs about politics today, so let’s just agree to disagree.
