Azerbaijan and Turkey have a mutual defense pact. Even though Azerbaijan is also a former Soviet country, it has deep ties with Turkey and was always more oriented toward the West. An attack on Azerbaijan may also further alienate Georgia (??), which could use the opportunity to try to get back Abhazia and South Osethia while Russia is busy elsewhere is the Caucasus. Iran dislikes Azerbaijan a lot, if Russia invades Azerbaijan is likely Iran and Armenia will also get involved. And the emerging picture (Russia, Iran, Armenia vs Azerbaijan, Turkey-NATO and perhaps Georgia) is already WW3-esque.

I don't know if Azerbaijan has enough oil to completely replace Russia though.. Azerbaijan doesn’t have enough oil to replace Russia, but has big gas reserves, and also owns the infrastructure for transport of oil & gas in the region. So, countries like Kazakhistan and Turkmenistan can transport their resources through Azerbaijan.
