The brightest explosions in the universe could be the work of ancient, dying stars.

These "empty-sky" gamma-ray bursts, as some astronomers call them, have presented an ongoing cosmic mystery for more than 60 years. But now, a new study, published Sept. 15 in the journal Nature, offers a compelling mathematical explanation for the powerful bursts' origins.

"We modeled the gamma-ray emission from all the galaxies in the universe … and found that it is star-forming galaxies that produce the majority of [empty-sky] gamma-ray radiation," lead study author Matt Roth, an astrophysicist at Australian National University in Canberra, said in a statement.

The rate of gamma-ray emissions was influenced by several key factors, including the size of the galaxy, the rate of star formation (which affects the rate of supernovas) and the initial energy of the cosmic rays created by each supernova.

"It's a significant milestone to finally discover the origins of this gamma-ray emission, solving a mystery of the universe astronomers have been trying to decipher since the 1960s," Roth said.

Don't we already know this? Or am I just tripping?

Happens a lot

Often theories are thrown around and u read about them then some study reinforces the theory and u read about it again...

But its often not repeating. Its just a theory that has advanced closer to being a fact if more direct evidence warrants it

No offence I couldve guessed it. It still makes zero sense tho, why have dying stars creating explosions? Why is there a ****ing dark sky out there with floating balls? Please can a genius be born and finally give us answers about this life? It drives me insane

The theory is that once they no longer have enough fuel to burn brightly enough the fusion explosions are no longer strong enough to keep matter out so when it reaches a certain threshold it all collapses in and all that pressure quickly creates massive explosion

Stars have very long time span horizons but this perticular event happens rather quickly

The vast majority of stars are also believed to not go super Nova. Only the biggest 1% or 2% would

Or own Sun is in the top 5% to 10% most massive stars and even it is not believed to be quite large enough to create a supernova and will likely just loose layers after going into a red giant followed by cooling off slowly as a white dwarf
