Not in and of itself no, but when it becomes all a community or someone cares about, or how appearance and looks play a role into sex in the gay community, it becomes so.

Also sex for the sake of sex and getting off and not for the intimacy and closeness with another it can bring is by its very nature superficial and surface level.

Society is drawing a weird line around it because of the taboo and inhibitions imposed by religion and conservatism.
