How do presidential pardons work? Did he have to save points and redeem pardons? Is there a punch reward card system? How many pardons can he possibly give?????

Can somebody explain how come the American President could use his own powers to absolve himself from his own crimes? Like, did u guys not think of the circular nature of such application of powers when u guys devised the system...

Brcause, by absolving himself he is basically admitting guilt.

Guilty of what, exactly? And who would be that desperate?

The forefathers were not dumb. No president would have been expected to pardon himself because of the “implications” of guilt. But It is not out of the question. The constitutional law doesn’t specifically say he can do it, but it doesn’t forbid him to do so either.

Similarly, if Trump grants mass pardons to members of his family, it would be viewed that Trump fears - rightly or wrongly - that his family members have committed crimes for which they need to be pardoned.

Not a good luck for any of them. Damaging their brand further, and any chances of political ambitions, including Trumps own 2024 aspirations. All the Trumps would be far better off being perceived as a sketchy first family than a legitimate crime family.

If he goes through with pardoning himself and other Trumps, he’s making a bigger mistake in the long run than not doing anything.

Even if he can pardon himself, I think it would be only for crimes for which he has already been charged.  I don't think he could pardon himself for charges made in the future.

But no one should be able to be able to pardon themselves? Surely there must be some other body who should have that job instead?

Thanks for explaining, although the negative implications of pardoning oneself doesn't really solve the contradictory nature of the act. They do explain that under practical considerations this is unlikely to happen, but should someone like Trump insists on going on with it, the peculiarity of how this is possible is still pretty evident.

because after all, the individual is setting aside the punishment of his own crimes :fail:

I agree.  But I don't think it is known yet if it is even legal.  If Trump tried it I guess the supreme court would have to decide.

If the supreme court has to decide about the constitutionality of self-pardon, it could be a difficult call.  I just read this:

"The Constitution provides that the president "shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment." This means the text of the Constitution doesn't specifically reject the idea. The founders clearly knew how to create exceptions to the pardon power — they created one for cases of impeachment. And if the founders decided not to create an exception for self-pardons, some have argued, it is improper and incorrect to read one into the text."

It’s a kind of paradox. Some parts of the constitution are. Perhaps they were designed that way, because there needs to be a fail safe at some point. Maybe this is it. He’s ruined with way, just less so one way or the other.
