LGMonster95 13,704
I absolutely love how her voice improved with years, don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with her TF voice but now she just sounds perfect

Ugh, her vocal versatility was incredible.

During TF, her voice always had that nasal affect she was using to actively try and conceal her classical/musical theater/jazz roots. that was probably cocaine nasal voice haha! FfFfFfFF 54,458
From a technical aspect I'm sure her voice is better now but I can't help but miss the high and youtful tone she had around BTW/ ARTPOP. Enigma for instance is giving me chills and her belting in the song is certainly more impressive, and overall her vocals improved but I still miss her old tone. If you hear her live performances you can see she has a harder more raspy chest voice vs the recordings in TF. Her voice was light back in 2007/2008 when she recorded TF, her late 2008/9 voice was lower because of touring, smoking, drugs and overworking herself. Smother Em Eh 7,052
Yes her voice has got so much power and a nice richness to it now. Her range is also spectacular. I do miss her BTW voice a lot though! Get Applause & G.U.Y to 1B views!

Or is this change more or less permanent? i've thought about this a lot too, cuz I felt like her voice made a huge jump between BTW and AP, and she's more or less kept that AP voice ever since (the more powerful, refined version of her voice). i think OP is right tho, songs like Babylon show that she can still go back to her OG Fame tone. also, this cover below (aside from being a kick ass rendition of Paparazzi), always sounds like an new-and-improved version of 2008 Gagz to me. I think even though she's older she could still go back to a similar sound if she wanted. Gaga is one of the most if not the most versatile artist when it comes to using her voice. Also, she has one of the best vocal coaches in the biz. The Pop-Voice of The Fame was created BY her and her producers to give the label the pop star voice they wanted. It‘s kind of what happens to most female pop stars, especially Britney, but with the coaching she has and the talent she has, she is able to pull it off in a healthier way and she can actually use it to her advantage. She deliberately „hid“ the theater and musical background because they said it won‘t work and it won’t sell, throughout all her albums (except maybe Joanne) she still used it. But it was used a stylistic choice for ad-libs and certain parts of the songs as an effect. She especially used it lots in the pop songs of Ally, and on chromatica for stylistic choices. The only thing I would say about this though is when you listen to her music pre-TF like unreleased Fusari tracks and Red and Blue, most of them don't show any of that musical background either. But some of her TF acoustic performances did showcase it and how deep she would go compared to the studio versions. But I agree with everything else and I like how on one album she can have basically every song sound different vocally, there's certain styles I prefer over others but I appreciate how much freedom and control she has with them

Cookie Tookie 10,546
I’m probably one of the few who believe her voice has gotten strained over the years. Listen to The Fame and early Fame Monster performances live on tour, and compare it to the most recent performances we’ve gotten. Her voice used to be at its peak in the beginning of her career. Effortless, full bodied, higher range, perfectly on pitch. After all the years of smoking, especially recently, her voice can not do the same things it used to do. She reached another peak in her career during the 2014 Jazz era, but that’s because she was training her vocals again. I mean, there’s even been a drastic change from the beginning of Enigma in 2018 to the last Enigma/Jazz and Piano performances. I’m hoping she’s taking care of her health and vocals, because when she does come back on tour and perform, I want her to be great.

Plus, it wasn't like she was using great technique for touring at the time since it was still new to her. I think her chest voice in the live versions were more of that, though editing definitely took place as well Madonna i think smoked as well and her voice stayed the same until maybe AL or confessions... So who knows and the performances of hers that we’ve gotten in pandemic like the tv special we’re great vocals. So maybe it was just being tired who knows

I’d say Joanne is super theatrical as well! She really puts on that twang thick at times like Sinner’s Prayer and A-Yo!
