Its leaves can grow up to two meters wide. Carlos Magdalena, a horticulturist at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, suspected it was a new species after seeing photographs on Instagram. Magdalena worked with botanists and Indigenous communities to find the plant. After days of searching, their boatman, Gustavo Melo, guided them to a hidden lake where they found five additional plants, including one in flower. The discovery was officially published in the scientific journal Phytotaxa. Researchers combined scientific knowledge, Indigenous experience, social media, and satellite images to identify the new species. Scientists estimate that only 30 to 50 plants remain in the wild, making the species extremely rare and potentially endangered. Further research is needed to locate more plants and assess its conservation status. Researchers hope to protect the water lily by collecting seeds, growing it in botanical gardens, and establishing protected populations. This discovery highlights the importance of teamwork and conserving Earth's biodiversity.
